Her disdain for these villages was strong - if they took some initiative instead of sitting around waiting for the shinobi population to coddle them, perhaps they would be able to defend themselves. And if they tried and failed, well, it was merely culling a weak population and leaving the strong with one less problem to be bothered by. But of course, that was unfair - these people did do something worthwhile: they provided the fee for her services, meaning that without them, she wouldn't get paid for anything.
The object of this mission was simple: find a common criminal and return him to Iwagakure. She wasn't supposed to kill him, which was quite a bother; not only would that be simpler, but it was a better solution to the problem. Even if they locked him up again, he probably wouldn't stay there for the rest of his pitiful life. Once they let him out, he would begin to thieve again, which was clear to see. Criminals like him were creatures of habit; they would always return to doing what they did best, be it thieving or killing or what have you, they would eventually get apprehended and return to jail, and if they got out again, they would repeat the process over until they either died or someone wised up and stopped letting them out of prison.
Her quarry had been in and out of jail twelve times in the past seven years, each time for dozens of instances of petty thieving. Whenever he got out, he spent around a month, perhaps more, living like any other plebeian; he attempted to acquire legal jobs, did good deeds, things like that. But of course, he always returned to thieving. If he didn't get the job he applied for, he'd steal money from the cash registers of the store. If he thought someone didn't appreciate something he did for them, he would steal from them. It was his way at getting back at people for 'wronging' him and exacting his own sense of justice upon the world. Really, it was rather pathetic, but she supposed he would never learn. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

She was alone, and could thus travel at whatever speed she wished to, without being forced to care about the pace others could handle. Despite being a patient person, the chunin despised moving at a slow pace like most civilians necessitated. Anything that slowed her down or burdened her was subject to her dissatisfaction - no, not anger, because anger was something that should not be wasted on merely being dissatisfied. It was more something she just couldn't be bothered to care about in a way that significantly affected the emotional capacity she displayed.
The village she had arrived at was especially small; it could hardly be called a village at all, and Masumi had wonder why the thief even bothered. Surely there wasn't anything worth stealing here, in this place of ramshackle huts and empty shops. How on earth could the inhabitants of this place pay for the services of any shinobi? They didn't exactly come cheap. Nothing here caught the eye at all; the villagers couldn't make the place look worse if they tried. Masumi snorted derisively; what, were they hiding stashes of ryo and gold under the rotting floorboards or something?
She headed to the largest house - not that that was saying much for its size - because, in her experience, that was where the man or woman in charge lived. She supposed the leader of this village had a measure of opulence compared to the rest of the plebeians, but it was still largely unimpressive and probably disgusting on the inside. Masumi wanted to begin her search for the thief without bothering to check in, but it would be wise to ask for any information the citizens might have - it could be valuable, after all. Pretty much the only valuable thing here. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

"Hold yer horses, I'm comin', I'm comin'!" a hoarse male voice shouted. A few moments later, she heard a thud and the man swearing; no doubt he had tripped over vermin or something of the like and went sprawling to the filthy floor. "What do ya need, miss?"
"Tell me about Takuma Hibiki, the thief." She did not bother with an introduction nor a request for the middle-aged man's name; neither were relevant and, when it came to the second, she just didn't care. "I am here to apprehend him."
"Yer a ninja? Really?" The man squinted at her, clearly skeptical of her claim. Masumi simply nodded; if he did not believe her, that was his problem. "...I'm not sure I think yer bein' honest with me, but eh. If yer tellin' the truth and I keep sayin' yer wrong, you'll probably kick my ass. Anyway, uh, he kinda just lurks 'round the center of town, near the shops. He's been attackin' people on the street, so if ya walk around enough he'll probably try to jump ya."
"Thank you. I will apprehend him and head straight back to Iwagakure without stopping by again; it is important to return him posthaste." Masumi informed him, leaving before the man could say anything else.
She made her way to the town center and the 'shops' that no one was visiting. Only a few people were milling about. Instead of searching for someone who matched the criminal's description, she entered each shop and spent as long as she reasonably could milling about and looking at nothing. It felt like hours passed before Takuma Hibiki made his move.
Masumi had exited a shop almost immediately after entering because of the filthy state of it - who would buy food from a place like that, seriously? - and had been distracted for a moment, an opportunity the large man took to push her to the wall and stand over her, grinning like an idiot. "What's a pretty girl like you doing all alone in a place like this?" he asked, leering lecherously. "Now see, in any other situation, I'd take all your money - but I wouldn't want to do that to a pretty girl. Is there maybe... something else you could offer me instead?"
"You are a disgusting swine, Takuma Hibiki. You will take nothing of mine." Masumi replied, an almost feral grin spreading across her face. "I must return you to prison - but they never said I had to return you in good condition." i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

He couldn't run as fast as a shinobi - so if he took off, she would catch him easily and probably use one of those jutsu on him, and that wouldn't end well. He could hit her - she was smaller than he was by a good bit, and he was pretty sure that ninjas weren't immune to being punched or anything cheaty like that, so...
During his moments of hesitation, the little ninja had activated something; her pale, unmarked skin had turned a shade of dark, earthy brown, and then... she punched him and put him out like a light. Moments later the dark coloration bled away and she set to work securing the criminal so they could set off when he awoke. She was strong for sure, but there was no way she could lug a man that size all the way back to Iwagakure. The farthest the chunin would deign to drag him was the road that led back to Iwagakure. Then she used a suiton technique and soaked him, which caused him to splutter awake. "Get up. We're heading back to Iwagakure. You are going to walk a step in front of me. You are going to behave. You are not going to try anything. Because, as I said before - I just have to return you alive, not necessarily in good condition. No one in Iwagakure will care if I have to break both your arms, your nose, and knock half your teeth out of your mouth to get you there."
He complied with her request, clumsily righting himself, and said nothing. Hell, she'd probably punch him if he talked, so there was no way he was going to take any chances. He almost preferred prison to being with this chick. She was kind of crazy and seemed the type that would kill him for blinking at her wrong, and that wasn't the kind of chick you wanted to piss off. Hibiki got the feeling that he pissed her off by existing, though, so there wasn't very much he could do about that. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

Ever a coward, he would rather go back to prison than face death at the hands of a teenage girl, and he was certain that would happen if he bugged her at all.
He was wrong, of course; she wanted to just kill him and be done with it, but her orders were to return him alive, and so she would - grudgingly, but she would. The mission was more important than her wishes, the same as it was for any shinobi worth their salt; if you were willing to throw away the mission over a petty desire, regardless of what it was, then you did not deserve to be a shinobi.
Her mind was fully occupied by recent events, and the only mind she paid to the criminal was an occasional glance to make sure that he was still where she had told him to be, that he hadn't managed to free himself of his bonds, that he wasn't trying to act up at all. And he wasn't, which caused her to smirk; it seemed she had frightened him to an extreme, something that amused her greatly. Really, she wasn't that terrifying. She'd just punched him and threatened to punch him more. She could have done any number of things more frightening: she could've blinded him, turned him mute, given him a wound that would kill him slowly... really, a couple punches was kind of tame.
They arrived at Iwagakure quickly; the gate guards congratulated her on capturing him again - which wasn't much of an accomplishment, honestly, a couple of genin could have captured the nitwit - and she escorted him to the jail, where she handed him over to the authorities. After that, she returned home to write up a succinct report, and turned that in, and she was done with a good few hours of daylight left. Hmm. Perhaps she could pick up a few D-Ranks while the sun was still up... i've come to burn your kingdom down. |
