Hashi was angry. He was angry for the first time in who knows how long. This wasn't just the momentary anger of battle or irritation but a real frustration at the confusing events of the past few weeks. Hashi had requested a job as a Jounin Sensai but had instead been assigned to guard a woman so powerful and free spirited he spent most of his time in her garden than by her side and he had become privy to a feud within the Daimyo's family that had erupted into attempted murder earlier that very day to mention the worst events in a long list of the odd events that had seemingly became his life.
Hashi was steaming mad but not quite furious enough to let it cloud his actions. He had decided he was going to find the Lady and he was going to ask for a different job. Frankly he would take anything at this point too. It had to be better than dealing with the mess that seemed to be Kasumi's life.
As Hashi walked down the hallway of Kusa's main Shinobi HQ he was puffing on the pipe like his lungs needed the nicotine to breathe rather than oxygen. It was the only physical sign of his anger to manifest so far.
Soon he had reached her door. He had checked everywhere else, even her love shack, and this was the last place. She had to be in this office. Hashi paced for a little while trying to think of what he was going to say before he turned to the door and raped sharply upon it. “Lady Kasumi,” He called questioningly “are you in there?” There was only one way to find out. Companion or not Hashi was not going to put this on hold. Hashi tried the handle and, since it was unlocked, he just swung it on open and stepped into the office “Lady Kasumi?”

There had already been one irate person screaming at her today - an enraged civilian parent who didn't want 'her poor little boy' on a team with 'that stupid slut' he had a crush on. Kasumi had looked at the team assignment and tried to rearrange the people on a few teams to get the woman off her back, but that squad was specialized and meant for a specific purpose and she couldn't justify changing it for one pissy parent. And so she'd gotten screamed at for about half an hour, until she had had the chunin guards outside her door politely escort the woman out.
God, she needed a drink. It was a good thing she always kept a bottle of rum in her bottom desk drawer. She pulled the drawer open and reached down to get it, but... it wasn't there. Fuck. Had she finished off the bottle the day before? Probably. She didn't really remember. Great. So she was stuck in the office with a pounding headache and no fucking liquor and a two foot tall stack of paperwork that needed attending to. Goddammit, she needed someone to push the paperwork off on. The blonde felt like pulling her hair out, it'd be more productive than anything else.
"Yes, yes, come in." she called to whoever stood on the other side of her office door. She was practically laying on top of her desk, resting her forehead against the cool wood, wishing that everyone would just shut up and leave her alone for half a bloody hour. But no, that was apparently freaking impossible. "Oh, it's you, Hashi darling. What do you need?" She had recently promoted the man to being her bodyguard. He had wanted to be a sensei, but she'd already assigned jonin to all the new teams, so she'd found something else for him to do. He hadn't been the happiest about it, but he would come around eventually, of that she was sure. |

She was there and surprisingly not engaged in any nefarious activities either. In fact he could see Paperwork piled high before her. For all the world she looked like a normal, functioning leader. This was not the first time he had spied her working either. He suddenly felt like his complaints were minor; idiotic even. After all the village was a safe, prosperous place and wasn't that all that really mattered? Did her extracurricular activities effect the running of the village at all? It certainly didn't look or seem like it.
Hashi faltered. He had forgotten everything he wanted to say. What he could remember was much too petty to mention now. That was until his mind came across that little fact of the attempted murder that had occurred earlier today.
Hashi sighed and moved further into her office until he stood behind the chair opposite her puffing on his pipe all the way there. “Lady Kasumi,” He began slowly formulating his words carefully “I have been hesitant to ask since I was appointed as your bodyguard a question that has burned in my soul ever since I learnt of my appointment. I can no longer hold my tongue however so I must ask what the purpose of my appointment is? Forgive me for questioning your motives, Lady Kasumi, but you are a capable and free willed Shinobi. Any who would dare stand up to you are likely beyond the scope of myself. That is, if I would even be there for such an attack. You disappear so often that my job might as well be guarding your home as I frequently wait for you their. If I may be so bold I believe my appointment here is a waste of valuable resources when I could be melding the minds of the future great Shinobi of Kusagakure as I originally requested.”

The chairs aren't going to bite you, and neither am I. Probably~" Her brow furrowed when he asked that burning question of his. She knew he didn't like it, but she hadn't thought he would question her. Not many people had the guts to do that. "You're right that I'm more than capable of taking care of myself - and, no offense meant to you, darling, but I am out of your league - but I didn't give you the position as my bodyguard with the intent of having you, well, guard my gorgeous body, as strange as that sounds."
She grinned when he mentioned how often he was standing about in front of her home. "See, now, you've got it figured out. That's right where I want you to be." Kasumi sat up straight and began tapping her nails on the lacquered wood. "I suppose I should explain. Are you aware of my darling son's opinion of myself and my daughter?" The hanchou paused to allow him to answer. "He hates the both of us, for a reason I cannot begin to fathom. It just breaks my heart. It's his goal to find a way to permanently disable my kekkei genkai techniques, you know, and as of late I have had... suspicions." She looked him right in the eye, wanting him to see not only a leader's concern, but a mother's worry for her child. "I have been afraid that he might make a move against my darling Madoka in an attempt to hurt me. He knows that I love her more than anything in this world. Losing her would kill me. Yet if I assigned her a personal guard, I know he wouldn't dare to make a move - he can be quite the coward."
It pained her to be so sneaky with her own family, but she didn't think she could trust Nagawa. She had given him everything she could - opportunities, the highest-paying missions, the best students - and he still wouldn't even give her the time of day. "Do you understand it better now?" |

Hashi hesitated but took the chair none the less settling into it while puffing long draws of nicotine from his pipe. She went on to recite his own suspicions back at him a healthy lashing of immodesty on the side. She spoke truly however. Some may have seen the Daimyo as a defenceless little girl but he had hunted Shinobi for too long. Through glimpses of her power, his limited knowledge of her clan's abilities and hearsay Hashi had constructed something of a Bingo Book account on her himself. Though the greatest hint he had ever received about the Daimyo's ower was when he had once 'found' an official Konohagakure hunter-nin's Bingo Book and found his own Daimyo to be S-Ranked. The Village Hidden in the Leaves, in Hashi's opinion, had always been at the forefront of information gathering and if they're info sent that the girl who stood before him was one of the most powerful Shinobi in the world than Hashi could quite easily believe that.
What she said next sent a domino effect of things clicking in Hashi's mind. Of course, how could he not see it? Everything Hashi had done up until this point. Interviewing all the servants, spending so much time at the Daimyo's manor, saving Madoka; it had all played into Kasumi's hands. He had effectively been performing a job he knew nothing about. How could he not have seen this earlier?
Now was not the time to be feeling sore about the Lady's duplicity however. She had definitely erred in some shape or form for the way she was talking it was as if she hadn't expected anything to happen like the events of this morning. At least he had managed to save Madoka before her death. Failing a job before he knew he even had it would have been some amount of failure.
“I am seeing things much more clearly, Lady Kasumi, which brings me to another matter we needed to discuss.” Hashi took a long draw of his pipe holding in the smoke for the longest time before tilting his head back and releasing a cloud of white smoke up to the ceiling. “Earlier today, while waiting for you at your home, I heard a disturbance. I rushed to see what had occurred and found...” Hashi hesitated. He didn't know quite how to say this. “I found Madoka and Nagawa locked in a struggle and, before my very eyes, Nagawa launched what I am sure was a deadly lightning technique at your daughter. I was able to redirect the technique in time and save your daughter but you must understand my concern. Nagawa has attempted to murder his own pupil. If I am to be her unnofficial bodyguard I don't know if I can operate between a sensai and his pupil. There are too many opportunities, you understand.”

She frowned when he made a spectacularly large cloud of white smoke that drifted all the way up to the ceiling before beginning to dissipate. It was a disgusting habit, really, but the hanchou was aware that separating the Yorino from his pipe was next to impossible - it was like an extra limb - and so perhaps she wouldn't give him a nasty disease for smoking in her office. This time.
When the jonin stopped hesitating and told her what he had seen - and done - that morning, the color drained from her face. "...I never imagined he would actually try to kill her. I thought he had at least a shred of decency, that he wouldn't strike down his family with so little remorse." Of course, the two shared no real familial ties, since Madoka wasn't fathered by Masuhiro - but that was her little secret. Regardless, she hadn't thought the boy capable of stooping so low. To hurt her, yes - she knew that Nagawa wasn't above that - but to actually attempt to kill her? Surely he knew that, once word of the incident got back to the hanchou, there would be dire consequences?
"You saved my daughter's life. There is nothing I could ever do to repay you for that. If... if she died, I wouldn't be able to cope." she murmured, blinking away the tears that had welled up in her honey brown eyes before they could fall. "I refuse to leave those two alone together any longer - and that includes on a team. He is no longer her sensei. I had hoped that putting them together would let them work past the fact that he hates me - it's an environment free of my meddling, for the most part - but I can't in good conscience allow that bastard near my little girl. You wanted to be a sensei. Well - for now - you have a student. Treat my darling well, or I'll slit your throat." Perhaps it was a rash decision - one she should have thought through better - but there was nothing she wouldn't do to ensure her daughter's safety.
"As for Nagawa... He will find that the consequences of his actions are very dire indeed." She looked Hashi straight in the eye. "I will kill him if he lays a hand on my daughter again. This has gone on too long, and it's gone too far. I can no longer turn a blind eye to him and pretend that, one day, we might be a happy family." It was proving difficult for her to keep her composure, but Kasumi refused to shed a tear in front of anyone. She was the strongest shinobi in the village, and she would not break down in front of any of her subordinates. "What damage did he do to her?" |

The shock was expected of her. After all there was no way the concerned mother before him was the sort of person who would have allowed such things to be going on if she truly knew the depths of Nagawa's depravity. Hashi saw only the concern of a mother; nothing more; nothing less. There was no nefarious doings going on here. A deranged adopted son had taken up some kind of personal vendetta against Kasumi and her blood. Nothing more, nothing less...
“It was nothing, Lady Daimyo.” Hashi had replied when she thanked him. “Ha, it's practically my job.” He said with a playful wink.
What was proposed next left Hashi somewhat dumbstruck. Him? The Daimyo had her choice of Kusa nin to place her daughter under if she wanted a more one-to-one mentorship. Then again it did make sense. It would give him an excellent excuse to keep an eye out for her. Hashi was the Katon Master and if bloodline was anything to go by when eventually Madoka unlocked her element it too would be Katon. It worked out for Hashi too. His life was no longer shrouded in such confusion. He was Protector and Sensai to the Daimyo's daughter. A prestigious title indeed and something that he could devote all of his time into but at the same time a relaxing pace unlike his old job in the ANBU. This had dream job written all over it.
“Thank you, Lady Kasumi.” Hashi replied graciously “You do me much honour. I will not let you down. Madoka shall be safe every moment she spends in my care.”
The Daimyo's warning was something to consider. A downside to an otherwise perfect task. The price of failure was steep. He had to be very careful. Of course he would not simply sacrifice a Genin anyway but with Madoka he would perhaps take extra care in their mission assignment and in her training. Perfection would be key.
“Her injuries were mostly superficial, Lady Daimyo.” Hashi hesitated a little “He did a lot of damage to her head and she may have had a concussion. I do not know but I do not believe there were any broken bones. If any a broken nose perhaps. The only technique used in the fight as I saw it was the raiton technique that I interrupted. I must warn you, Lady Daimyo, he tried to pass it off as a friendly spar and your daughter's, umm, devotion may cause her to collaborate but I saw a flash of electricity and many of your servants did too. There may even still be a scorch mark in the boy's room where the incident took place. Unfortunately this sad event really occurred.”

Kasumi nearly snapped at him, but stopped herself - the jonin wasn't the one that deserved her anger - and she knew he was only trying to lighten up the mood, but she really didn't want her mood lightened until she'd figured out the proper solution to the Nagawa problem. Her motherly instinct - and shinobi instinct - told her to kill him, of course. Remove the threat - remove the danger to her child.
The hanchou smiled sweetly. "If my dear Madoka gets so much as a single scratch on her pretty little face, it will be you who is held responsible. Allow her to get injured, and I cannot guarantee your continued good health." she informed him. "This is not as easy a job as you think it is. Until I see fit to reassign her to a different sensei, you will be held accountable for everything she does and everything that happens to her." Perhaps that was a little harsh - but there was nothing Kasumi wouldn't do to keep her daughter safe. Nothing.
"Oh, my poor little baby. I assume you or the servants got her to a medic as soon as was possible?" Kasumi asked - and if the answer was anything but 'yes,' she was going to set something on fire. "I wish he was capable of changing. I really do. I loved him like a son, a-and he turns around and does this... using my one real weakness to wound me. His parents would have been so ashamed of his actions." Although she didn't really have much right to talk fondly about Nagawa's parents - she'd killed them, after all - that wasn't exactly public knowledge. "His mother was the sweetest, kindest woman I've ever known. She would be horrified to know he attacked my child - s-she wanted to be my midwife, but the poor woman died before she got the chance." She let a little feigned sorrow leak into her tone. "How could her child turn out like this?" |

Uh-oh, he had landed himself in it again. He was, perhaps, in a completely different yet ultimately similar job than the one had come in with. Though, to be fair, he was much more likely to be tortured brutally if he let the Daimyo's daughter die than if he let the Daimyo die. He might have been exiled, re-assigned, shamed or executed if the Daimyo died but not tortured. It was the Daimyo herself who had the fondness for torture. “Yes, ma'am.” Hashi replied seriously. It didn't call for a long answer of any kind. He had to show that he understood her clearly and he certainly did. Then the woman went straight back to concern for her daughter quicker than a drop of a hat. “Of course, the servants took her to your own resident medic. I saw fit to escort them should Nagawa have another relapse. I left only when she was in the trusted care of the healer.” Hashi replied somewhat eager to prove himself after her toxic warning. The Daimyo sure knew how to inspire fear to motivate. He could see, of course, that she was just another mother. Underneath her fierce persona it seemed that Kasumi had really tried to make this family work Nagawa and all. It was heart breaking to see her like this. He rued the very day Nagawa was born and was starting to regret giving the boy that warning. Of course it did not seem likely Nagawa would run despite even the warning Hashi had given. The man had some sort of a pained vendetta against the Lady of Kusagakure and it was certain to be one he took to the grave for this was one mother who took to protecting her baby with the fierce instincts of all of mother nature. Nagawa's fate was sealed. Hashi took a puff from his pipe. With all the excitement it seemed almost as if he had hadn't smoked in ages. In reality it could have been no longer than ten minutes and as short as five or six. As he exhaled, again up to the ceiling knowing that the Daimyo would not enjoy a puff of smoke in her face, he realised that there was perhaps a piece of wisdom in that head of his that could do some good. “My father died many years ago now while out on a mission. It was during my time at the Academy when I was first learning my place in this world. When he died I felt so angry. I felt angry at his squad mates. I felt angry at the rogue shinobi who had done this to him. I even felt angry at him for risking his life when he had a young son at home to take care of.” Hashi took another long smoke as he remembered the painful memory. “I got into a fight with the son of one of the men on my father's team that fateful mission. I was so angry and so much better than this boy. I was beating him with all of my vigour when my mother happened upon us. She dragged me off the boy and straight home. She planked me down on the sofa and told me: 'Hashi Yorino, that was an awful thing to do! You know it was not Darui's fault that your father passed away. Now, everyone has to deal with loss at one time. Death sometimes consumes more than just the dead and if you let it consume you too then that's just how you'll end up. Revenge never solves anything it merely leads to even more revenge. At one point someone has to just take it. It's the only way to end such a cycle and move on with your life. Now you march right over and apologise to both Darui and his son and you take whatever punishment he throws at you.'" Hashi finished with a smile on his face as he recalled his mother's words. “The man did not punish me. Instead we took dinner together and talked off the good memories we shared of my father. I don't know how that might help with your situation, milady, just thought a tale of my own recollection might help to ease the mind.”

"Now that that matter is settled, I want to explain what I'd like you to be teaching my darling daughter." She had a whole list of things drawn up - things she wanted to teach the girl herself, but didn't have time to - and, after a few minutes of rummaging around in her desk, she found it. "Take this. It explains my plans for her - you might find it useful. A basic list... chakra control is necessary, I'd like her to have higher reserves, and it would be nice if you could help her unlock her innate affinity for katon - that's what you've got as well, yes?"
Kasumi wanted her daughter to follow in her footsteps as a ninjutsu powerhouse - but she also wanted the girl to be well-rounded. Her own taijutsu was hardly average, and she'd never really bothered with genjutsu at all - she wanted Madoka to be good at everything. Or, well, at least decent. "Of those three, I would like you to prioritize chakra control. Not only will that help her with her kekkei genkai, but I'd like her to learn genjutsu as well." she explained. "And... Please try to refrain from smoking around my daughter, if at all possible."
She listened to the man's story, and nodded. "He blames everything on me. And I mean everything, even events I had nothing to do with." In truth - most of the things Nagawa blamed her for were her fault, but Kasumi was quite good at covering up the truth. "My late husband was the hanchou of this village before I was, and his father - who was the country's daimyo as well - before him. Had Masuhiro not died so young, it would be Nagawa in this chair, not I. He's said before he doesn't want the position - but I doubt that's the truth. Since the village's founding, the position has belonged to the firstborn Genda child. And since he is not mine, thank the gods - Madoka will be the next village hanchou." She hadn't quite explained the entirety of the job to her daughter yet, but the girl seemed excited to take over for her mother one day.
"Nagawa actually thinks that I killed his parents - my dearest friend Madoka and the love of my life Masuhiro - to take this position of power. To take it away from him." Kasumi murmured, tone solemn. "That is the basis of his hatred. I have told him time and time again that he is wrong, but he won't listen. I could - I could never do that to the people I loved... I was the first one at their bedsides, the first one to discover what was afflicting them, but.. I couldn't save them. And it killed me inside." |

The Lady was very suddenly to business. It was unusual, but not unprecedented, for parents to assemble a teaching plan for their shinobi children and approach their sensais with it. However it was even more rare that a Snsai ould be obligated to follow such a plan. Usually the Sensai was in complete control over the entire teaching affair parents be damned. Of course the Lady Hanchou was no ordinary parent. “Yes, Lady Kasumi.” Hashi said taking the scroll. He opened it in front of him and perused the list as she talked. He daren't need to however as the Lady more or less recited the entire list for him. Hashi closed the scroll and tucked it under his arm devoting his attention to the Lady as she continued to add notes. “Indeed, milady. In fact I even specialise in it, milady.” Hashi replied taking a puf of his pipe. “If you wanted someone taught about Katon then you've picked the best man for the job if I dare to be so immodest.” Hashi rose an eyebrow when she began to speak about Genjutsu. That was a rather lofty goal for a Genin. Stranger things have happened, he reasoned, then again usually my ass isn't on the line for them to do so. It was just then that Kasumi dropped the biggest bombshell of all. Please try to refrain from smoking around my daughter', Hashi gasped in surprise and his pipe fell out of his mouth. His dexterous fingers plucked it from mid-air however and replaced it in his mouth again, ' if at all possible.' Hashi let out out a sigh of relief. “Yes, Lady Kasumi. I understand. I will do my best.” Hashi agreed when finally she seemed finished speaking about her daughters education. It was the first time Hashi had ever considered the young girl as the next Lady Hanchou of the village. He remembered the timid girl he had interviewed and the beaten pulp he had escorted to a medic. She was a long way from sitting in that chair. Then again, Hashi suspected, the current Lady was a long way from giving up that chair anyway. Hashi stood and gave an incline of his head in respect. “If I may leave, Lady Kasumi. I have had a very long day and my eyes droop even now. I thank you for the position you have given me and the wise words you have spoke. I hope that I do not fail you in the days to come.” Hashi's words were carefully picked and he mulled them over as he left the room. He had to be careful now. He was standing on the edge of a flame. One slip up and he would fall into the fire and catch ablaze. [Exits Thread]

She didn't have any unrealistic expectations of him, like he would be able to turn her little girl into a child prodigy in the space of a month or so. Maybe he'd be able to unlock her element, maybe he'd be able to improve her chakra control a little - but Hashi was no worker of miracles, so she wasn't going to treat him as if he was. "Just do your best, dear. I don't expect you to turn her into a chunin in a few months or anything, and I won't kill you if you don't." Whether or not that would set him at ease, she didn't know. He seemed a little nervous, what with all the extra formality he'd poured into the words he'd just spoken.
She couldn't help but giggle when he dropped his pipe out of horror. "I'm serious, Hashi. I don't want you smoking so much around her. It'll set a bad example. I swear to god, if my daughter ever picks up a pipe or a cigar or anything, I'll break your precious pipe in half. And prevent you from ever getting another one." she said sweetly. "I'm not at all joking. Don't doubt me." That would probably scare him even more, and after she'd just made an attempt to calm him down, too. Oh well. It was bad enough that the bastard child smoked in her house, she wouldn't have her daughter picking up that bad habit too.
"Yes, yes, go ahead and take your leave. I'll find you when I believe my darling is fit to train with you." Kasumi dismissed him with a little wave, watching him leave. This was certainly going to prove interesting in the days to come, to see if a different teacher could help her daughter reach her full potential easier than the hanchou could. As a mother, she tended to be a little soft on the girl - even if Madoka thought their sessions were brutal, Kasumi was honestly going easy on her. That wasn't to say that Hashi wouldn't; no, for a while he would tread carefully, walk on eggshells, so he didn't hurt the girl and incur the wrath of Kasumi.
