The day was early, eerily silent and with little commotion. The sun had barely risen over the various mountain peaks to the east and as such the familiar heat of Tsuchi no Kuni had yet to set in. This was the prime condition for one to travel should they have the urge, or in this case was assigned to. Cool-ish temperatures and a not yet blazing sun made any trek a bearable one, though those conditions would only last for so long. The various sentries who had been stationed at the gates were surely tired and eagerly waiting for their replacements to arrive and Taichi shuttered at the memories of being assigned gate duty. While it was indeed a integral part of village security most days were spent looking out into the barren wasteland with little more than the occasional cloud passing by to give a sliver of entertainment.
But why was a Jounin who no longer had to worry about such a lowly task as gate duty standing near them so early in the morning? Simple, he had a mission and was soon to depart. That is, when the second person showed up. He had forgotten their name but remembered the rank as Chunin which hopefully meant that they would be able to hold their own during the excursion. Taichi had awoken before sunrise to get in some last minute workouts which was the reason he had arrived well before the other person, so he was in no way upset about having to wait. From his pack the man fished out the scroll that had the mission details written on it. Apparently some stones had been taken from a noble family's house and needed to be retrieved. Chances were the stones, known as Kingdom Hearts, were probably fancy looking decoration and the low-life who took them thought they would fetch a decent price on the black market. No matter, the mission didn't call for a lesson in morality but just that the stones were taken back.
The place where the bandits had set up operations were about a days journey which is why Taichi wanted to depart at such an hour so that they could get started before the heat set in, though at some point the duo would eventually be bombarded by the suns rays. Conditions such as these were the norm for this country, and most people had become used to them though that didn't mean they preferred walking a day's journey in it.

A lot of people tended to wait until at least noon, the lazy imbeciles. Not only was morning the best time of day, but it was the most prudent time to depart when traveling was a necessity. If you left early enough, and the distance wasn't extreme, you could arrive before nightfall. Of course, with a destination at least a full day away, that wouldn't be possible, but good time would be made, at the very least.
Masumi had spent the hours before sunrise meditating, and going over what she had learned about her jonin partner for the mission. He was a decade older than she, had earned the nickname Short Fuse due to his temper - which he had better keep in check for the duration of the mission, or else - and his main skill was taijutsu, which he augmented with his kekkei genkai, the explosion release. Overall... she would say that, by physical skill alone, they were equals, but with the addition of her ninjutsu prowess, fuuinjutsu skills, and summoning contract, she would prevail in a fight. That did not inspire much confidence in the jonin's skill, and in fact, it inspired a bit of disdain in the teen. If she had superior skill, then she should be the jonin and he the chunin. He was no more deserving of the rank than anyone else - and if he would lose to one of a lesser rank, well.. perhaps he did not deserve it.
The intensity of her thoughts was what made her a little late. She had happened to notice that the position of the sun in the sky was lower than she anticipated, and had hurried to gather her supplies and head to the rendezvous point. She was not late - indeed, they were both early - but she was later than she would have liked, which soured her mood already.
Masumi dipped her head to the muscled man - who was a mere two inches taller than she, something the chunin had not expected. "I apologize for my tardiness. Shall we depart?" i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

He hadn't waited for too long before the figure of another made itself visible to the Jounin. Though he still could not remember the name he did remember that it was to be a female, and given the Chunin rank it was very possible that this was her. As she bowed and apologized for her tardiness Taichi made a mental note of it. She seemed respectful and though this was the beginning of their very first encounter fairly capable. "Not a problem." He replied turning towards the gate as the parameters for the mission ran through his head once more. It seemed fairly basic and the opportunity to fight had not presented itself to the man in quite some time so there was definitely a lot of steam to let off. Hopefully there would be some leftovers for the Chunin.
"Yes, let's." He added as he began to pass through the gate that provided a decent level of security for the village. Iwa's natural terrain kept it safe from most who had intentions on causing harm to the village and for all intents and purposes it did better than the gates. That was usually the case for man made designs as they could be beaten by both mother nature and other men. No matter, that was reason guards were stationed at the gates in the first place, and so far they had not managed to screw anything up. As the pair would venture away from the village Taichi figured that at some point there would at least need to be some sort of small talk as the terrain didn't grant them any worthwhile views. Besides, this would prove a great opportunity to go over strategy... and learn the Chunin's name.
"Masaru Taichi. What was your name, again?" He asked, figuring that it was only polite to give his name and that just maybe she had not remembered his either which would effectively avoid any and all awkwardness. A less than clever ruse to be honest, but Taichi couldn't be bothered coming up with some elaborate plan to figure out her name; even though he had more than enough time to given the length of the mission.

If the roles had been reversed... well, she wouldn't exactly give him hell for it or anything, but he would certainly have received a reprimand. And she had expected, with the man's legendary temper and all, that he would at least say something more about it instead of waving it away like he had. However, she was not one to stir up trouble where it had been avoided, and thus the chunin refrained from mentioning anything more about it.
Masumi followed a few steps behind him as they exited the village, watched the the weary gate guards. You would figure that you'd get used to being up through the night and part of the morning if you worked that job long enough. She wouldn't know, though; that was one job she had never had to deal with. All her time as a chunin had been spent on the general task force, as that was where her skills were best put to use. But, as boring a job as gate guard might be, it needed to be taken seriously. The way those two were acting, she wouldn't doubt someone could just stroll into the village without any hindrance and cause all sorts of havoc. Every job was a meaningful job, no matter how boring and menial it seemed, and these lousy chunin were disrespecting the Tsuchikage by taking the job he had assigned them lightly.
"Maeda Masumi. I would prefer for you to address me as Maeda-san, if you must." she replied. There should not have been any need for introductions; they had gotten files on each other, surely he had read the one he received and learned her name. If he hadn't... What kind of irresponsible jonin didn't read the file? Oh, never mind that. If he had not bothered to read it, he didn't need to know anything about her other than her name. She was certainly not going to offer up any information, not even if he dared to ask. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Maeda-san."
Ah, Maeda Masumi, that was the name. He would not forget it, at least for the duration of the mission. Her tone held a slightly serious vibe to it, almost cold and unyielding. Hopefully that meant she was smart enough to not make any cracks at his height, though Taichi would have preferred not to pick a fight on an official mission. She didn't seem much of a talker and honestly the Jounin was content with not having to rack his brain for a conversation starter. After all, the two should have been completely focused on the mission at hand and used this opportunity to put themselves in the right position mentally. Yes, this was no doubt how things would turn out. Dead silence. With the occasional gust of wind making a passing sound.
Rocky terrain led to... more rocky terrain as the pair continued their trek through the stone country. Every so often they would come across a deep gorge that provided a deep view but not once did Taichi consider stopping to look as he had locked himself somewhere deep in his mind to go prepare himself for the mission. The sun's natural progression from east to west had put it slightly past noon and brought with it the unforgiving heat that those who called this land home were accustomed to. The Jounin barely noticed it at this point in his life, having felt it everyday for over two decades, and he surmised that the Chunin was also unaffected.
For a moment Taichi wondered just how long the council were going to stall on giving him a team. It had been the only reason he accepted the promotion to Jounin in the first place, but it had been a couple years now and there had yet to be any Genin assigned to him. Sure, leading a mission with a Chunin counted for something he supposed, but it was a far different scenario than the one he wished. What his sensei had been able to do for him Taichi wanted to replicate to whomever was put under his tutelage and he wondered why the council were blind to see that fact. Yes, his temper was well documented but nobody was perfect, and he was fairly certain that it wouldn't be an issue around a group of Genin. Perhaps he would ask for an audience with the Tsuchikage when they returned so he could get to the bottom of it, or at the very least put in another request; though that would more than likely require paperwork which Taichi could not stand, and probably the reason he didn't bother to memorize the mission details.

And even if he had, what was he really going to do about it? Attack her or scream at her right outside of the village? She thought not.
At least he seemed to be another person that appreciated silence. If he had tried to start a conversation, she would have told him in no uncertain terms that he had better shut his mouth and focus on the task at hand. Sure, he outranked her, and thus she really couldn't tell him what to do, but that most certainly would not stop her. Masumi had no desire to converse with the man at all; she did not want to know anything about him other than what she had read in the file.
The terrain around them featured only minute changes - valleys and gorges every now and then, but mostly just rocks. Lots and lots and lots of rocks, which Masumi held no ill will for. Some people found the lands of Tsuchi no Kuni to be barren, without life, ugly - and perhaps the former two were true, but certainly not the latter. It held a different kind of beauty than lush grasses and forests; it was stark, bare, minimalistic - exactly the kind of thing she liked. The hot sun bearing down upon them was a small matter; while she would have preferred the chill of darkness or the small warmth held by the sunrise, there wasn't anything she could do about it. And thus it became entirely unworthy of her attention.
Instead her mind wandered, thinking of how to conduct herself when it did come down to a fight. It would be different, working with someone whose main skill was taijutsu. That meant that they were both close range, and getting too close to Taichi while he was using bakuton probably would not end well. That was treading onto foreign territory; Masumi had never worked with anyone who had manifested a kekkei genkai like that before. It would certainly be interesting, to say the least. She might have to just use summoning and mid-range ninjutsu, depending. Hmm. Well, she would find out what she had to resort to later on, when a fight actually began. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

The two would continue to journey with not so much as a sigh having come from either of them. For most it would have been eerie and awkward but for some reason the silence was rather quaint and felt necessary. It meant that both of these shinobi were focused on the task at hand and preparing themselves for it. Since he had neglected to look over the mission details there was little strategy Taichi could employ at the current moment seeing as how he didn't know what type of techniques Maeda-san used, though he would be sure to rectify that whenever they stopped to set up camp for the night. For now he would simply do what he could to the best of his abilities, which was mainly taijutsu with very small amounts of ninjutsu thrown in the mix. Even then, it was mainly for espionage purposes which would prove quite useful until the actual fighting started.
The sun's travel across the sky had put it near the western horizon and light was rapidly beginning to fade. They were fairly close to their destination but far enough away that they could not be spotted by any sentries sent on lookout duty. Taichi gave the area a once over and saw that a mostly dead piece of shrubbery was protruding from the stone surface, a perfect fire starter. "We'll set up camp for the night there." The Jounin stated while pointing an index finger toward the bush. From his bag the man fished out some flint and still along with a couple small bricks of fire starter. Luckily the shrub caught quick and soon enough a small yet sustainable fire was burning. He could only imagine what, if anything, would come out of the girl's mouth had he taken any longer to start the fire. With a thud Taichi took a seat on the hard surface, heat still radiating from being baked in the unforgiving sun all day.
Once more than the Jounin would rummage through his pack and this time emerged a scroll that contained all the details for the mission. A quick yank revealed its contents which held in it names, locations, and most importantly information on the Chunin. Her skill set was similar to that of Taichi in that she knew her fair share of taijutsu techniques but also seemed somewhat practiced in both Doton and Suiton ninjutsu, as well as sealing. An interesting girl, to say the least, but something one would never know since conversation didn't seem to be her strong suit. Chances are the two would be dealing a hefty amount of physical blows to the opposition and then at some point Maeda-san would fall back and use ninjutsu, and she had probably already worked that scenario out in her head hours ago.
The scroll also contained information on the hideout where the bandits had set up camp: a couple of shacks that probably couldn't house more than a dozen that were roughly two floors each. Whether the stones were all in one location or split up was something the two of them would have to find out on their own. "We'll set out at dawn to check out their spot and see how many we're up against. At some point we'll have a fight on our hands and the quicker we dispatch of them the sooner we can start looking for the stones. We'll each take a house and search it, probably better that way. Any questions?" The explanation was direct and covered most of the basis but there was always a chance the Jounin missed something which the Chunin was probably going to have no problem pointing out given the aura she exuded.

If he was like this all the time, perhaps she would request to be paired with him more often - better a quiet jonin with a short fuse than, say, chronically tardy or overly obnoxious genin, or chunin that didn't know how to do their job properly. She would have congratulated him for not irritating her out of her skull - if she was the sort that did that kind of thing.
Despite her endurance, Masumi was quite relieved when they settled down for the night, though not a word was spoken of it. It was slightly irritating to watch him try to start the fire - if he had taken any longer, she probably would have taken the flint and fire starter bricks away from him and done it herself. Patience with other people had never been one of her strong suits.
She sat down a decent distance away from him while still being pretty close to the fire, observing the blond man. It seemed he was finally deciding to read up on the mission. Well, it was about time. "...you really didn't read the details earlier?" she murmured, though she couldn't say she was all that surprised.
"Understood." Masumi responded after he laid out the skeleton of a plan. "I do wish to inquire about your abilities - your kekkei genkai. As mutational chakra natures are rare, I am not entirely sure how it works or what occurs when one uses it. I would appreciate it if you could further detail the ability so I do not accidentally ruin the mission by doing something that would prevent you from using it to its full potential or something that would harm the both of us." It was the most she had spoken all day, and it would probably surprise him a little. But that was vital information - and, she had to admit, the scholar within her was curious. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

Taichi could feel his eye muscles begging to react and shoot a glare towards the girl for her comment, but that would surely undo all the "progress" had taken place today. Besides, after the mission there was a chance the two probably wouldn't see each other so there was no reason to get all worked up... at least until the journey back to Iwa. Her response was concise and though the instructions weren't all that different to begin with it was a relief not having to go over them a second time. Taichi felt that would not be case when, or if he ever got his team as Genin were either dense or aloof and needed much more guidance than the Chunin that sat across from him.
His eyes did shoot up when Maeda-san began to speak again, however, as he wasn't planning to hear her voice until the morning, if at all. She had inquired about his Kekkei Genkai, the Bakuton, and its abilities so that she could adequately adjust her strategy. This one was wise beyond her years and would probably make Jounin in no time, most would have just gone with the flow and tried their best not to get in the way. But not this one, who seemed to have an active mind and wanted things to go as smoothly as Taichi did. Perhaps she wasn't all that bad after all.
"Ah, of course. Simply put I channel chakra to my extremities and after making contact with someone or something the chakra explodes. Fairly messy when used on people." He began, throwing in the last part as an off attempt at humor. "Since I have to channel chakra first you shouldn't be in any direct danger if we happen to bump into each other or something along those lines, though when the explosions do occur the immediate vicinity is a bit of a danger zone depending on how much force is output." Thus ended the explanation of his ability and hopefully alleviating any fears of being caught in it, though there was one more thing the Jounin wanted to add just in case Maeda-san was still a bit apprehensive.
"Judging from your skill set I saw on the scroll you should be able to operate at multiple ranges, so there shouldn't be too many instances where we get in each others way." Taichi added in that last part to show that while he had not read up on the mission information before setting out that he had soaked up the information rather quickly. It was more him trying to protect his pride than anything else, with a smidgen of sating his conscience.

If he hadn't read the mission until they were fairly close to the destination, well, he was in need of some sort of reprimand. Not only was that irresponsible, but on some missions that kind of behavior could get someone killed. What if the scroll had detailed something about a possible ambush, for example, and the shinobi didn't read the scroll and thus walked right into an ambush that killed him?
She snorted - not because his attempt at humor was actually humorous, but because of the mental picture that provided. "So the effects on the human body are not unlike what would happen if you put an explosive tag on someone and blew it up?" If so, that was a comparison that helped her to understand the ability better. Being able to relate Bakuton to something she had experience with was valuable, in her mind. "I will keep that in mind. Thank you for the explanation."
She raised an eyebrow at what he said next. "Well, in all honestly, that depends on what you expect me to do. I can operate at mid-range, but my usefulness is severely limited - most of my ninjutsu are defensive or supplementary, intended to aid me in close quarters." Her fuuinjutsu weren't useful in a battle, and of course her taijutsu was only handy in close quarters, even an idiot knew that, "The summoning technique would be the only real offensive I have from mid-range, and I am reluctant to deplete my chakra by calling up powerful kitsune. Taijutsu is my preferred skill, and what I am best at, thus it is what I will use. So, let us just say that I will stay well away from you when possible." i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

She was quick on the uptake, that much was certain and her explanation was spot on, though the force of Bakuton was much more considerable than an explosive tag, but he was sure the Chunin would account for that. The snort was also a welcomed sight, or in this case sound as it proved that there was indeed life behind those soulless eyes. She probably scared small children with her gaze, if she ever ventured around them to begin with; Taichi's guess was no.
The Chunin's words about her fighting skills were extremely helpful as the Jounin had glanced over them just enough to know that they were there and not necessarily what their application was. An oversight on his part and one that he would need to separate from his hatred of paperwork so that a mistake could be avoided on the next mission. It seemed as though they would both be utilizing taijutsu should the need to fight arise. Fair enough, Taichi enjoyed finding others who preferred to use their fists instead. This would be an interesting turnout, and more than likely an all out brawl at the heart of it. He nearly cracked a smile at the notion but thought against it, at least until he was out of eyesight of the girl.
"Fair enough. If there's nothing else we should probably call it a night." Taichi stated as he couldn't think of anything else to say and knew that this girl was not the one for small talk. That much he had learned during the entire days journey. He would use his pack as a head rest but needed no blanket as the heat from the surface would be more than adequate for a single night added to the fire which would eventually burn itself out by the time the pair awoke. A few sporadic thoughts crossed his mind as he slowly drifted off to sleep. Few were of the mission but instead were calming techniques to help clear the mind of unessential thoughts. They proved most effective and within minutes the Jounin at passed out.

Masumi did not enjoy being studied at all; not only did she find it slightly unnerving, whether it was coming from a blond jonin that had never hit his growth spurt or not.
He didn't say anything further in regard to her skills, but that just proved to her that he had very little of value to offer by way of strategy. It was ridiculous. How had a man like this become a jonin, exactly? If not for her wish to avoid a confrontation between them, she would have said something aloud, but as it was - it was best to let the sleeping beast lie. If an action that she took compromised the mission in some way - by causing them to fight and thus leaving them in no shape to complete the objective, a verbal argument that alerted their quarries to their location, anything like that - she would never forgive herself. The mission came first. It always came first, regardless of her feelings. That was what it meant to be a shinobi, you were a secondary concern to any military matters.
"That would be prudent." she murmured in assent, shifting to find a more comfortable position, pitch black hair laid against her pack. But she did not close her eyes, did not leave the waking world for the realm of dreams - she rarely ever did, and that rarity became even rarer while on missions. She simply did not sleep, not very often. Some would view chronic insomnia as a problem - and most of the time, she did complain about it; there were only so many useful things one could do during the night - but at other times, it was a welcome relief, allowing her time to think and reflect as she gazed upon the stars. i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

Seemingly as soon as the man closed his eyes they were back open in the morning. Sleep had come and gone and while he wasn't particularly well rested it would suffice until he could return to the village. The sun had yet to break the horizon but there was enough light to get around. Taichi sat up and took a look around the immediate surroundings. Maeda was still there and the fire looked to have fizzled out some time ago. There was little need for morning pleasantries as the Chunin would probably not reciprocate them, but that wasn't a big deal. The time had come to focus solely on the mission and needless complications such as not saying good morning to each other would just get in the way.
It took only a few moments for the Jounin to ready himself and his belongings, and during that time he hoped that Masumi was readying herself as well. "Alright, let's get moving." They still had a bit of a walk before reaching the encampment and the less sunlight there was to give away their position the better. It was amazing how similar everything looked out here and to the untrained eye getting lost was sure to happen. Perhaps not as bad as walking endlessly in a desert but just as unforgiving. East was the direction that the duo had to travel and in time they would come upon a the top of a cliff that overlooked the two shacks. Taichi extended a single hand and signaled for them to drop to a crawl as to not be seen.
Peering over the edge yielded an excellent view, and the reconnaissance had now begun. There were three of the bandits lunging about outside, all holding some form of weapon though none looked to be particularly reliable in a fight. It was safe to assume that the rest were either inside or on patrol somewhere. Leaving them unaccounted for would be a grave mistake so something had to be done. Of course, they could have easily just began fight which surely would have drawn out the rest of them, though if any of them were smart enough to attack from a hidden position then it would cause a problem. Perhaps a new view was necessary to handle this problem.
Slinking back from his position over the cliff the Jounin turned towards his partner before speaking. "What would you say we do about the others who we can't account for?" He asked. There were two reasons for this, one of them actually wanting to find an answer, and the second being an opportunity for the Chunin to to showcase the prowess that she obviously had. One person doing all the work, while fine if it was correct, didn't necessarily foster the best of partnerships, though that probably didn't mean much to Masumi. No matter, it was on her to answer now and depending on the plan they would either run into a fight or continue the espionage tactics.

There was only so much to contemplate in regards to an upcoming fight, and she had exhausted most of her topics quickly. Thus she had been forced to move on to something else - as she did not enjoy dwelling on anything - and so on and so on. Really, it was quite boring. She had ended up sitting there, watching the man sleep for lack of anything better to do. So she knew when he had awoken, and her morning greeting was a mere nod. During the night, she had also rearranged everything in her pack twice and made sure that the only thing she would have to do in the morning is pick it up and she'd be ready to go.
The walk passed quickly - at least they were doing something - and dropped smoothly when he made the signal. There was no need for verbal communication on something that simple, it would take an idiot for that to be necessary. And while she wasn't so sure of his intelligence being anywhere near superior to hers, he certainly was not dumb.
"The simplest tactic is to attack the ones we can see and thus draw out the rest. I would discard that method because we cannot be sure of their exact number, there could be too many for us to handle in a straight-up fight." That was doubtful, but it was always best to err on the side of caution when one's life could be on the line. "I would suggest making a sweep of the area around the camp, if we can. Use stealth and what little time we have before the sun rises to find and remove as many of the others as we can before engaging in an open fight in their camp." i've come to burn your kingdom down. |

Taichi nodded at the Chunin's words as they were exactly what he wanted to hear considering the situation. She was a wise one and exactly the type of shinobi the village needed, but that was a discussion for a later day. So it was decided to take the stealth route and that's what they would do but just how exactly would they go about it. They had roughly half an hour or so until the sun would begin to fully illuminate the area so they needed to work quickly. Backing up a bit further from the cliff edge the Jounin would rise to a crouch and begin moving around the perimeter, hopefully with Masumi in tow.
It would not be long until the sounds of others than themselves could be heard, two people to be exact. They looked to be more of the regular bandit type but there was no harm in being a bit more careful. Taichi made a chopping signal to his neck to signify how they would be taking these two out. With just a few handseals1 the man became invisible to the naked eye and silently moved behind one of the targets. Unfortunately the two were a couple meters away fro each other and facing each other which meant that if there was any gap in the takedowns there was a chance one of them could set off a signal. Granted, this would surely drive the others out so that they could finally see how much they were up against, but the more stealth the duo could use the better.
He hadn't a way to signal the Chunin when to attack but knew that the technique he was using was also a part of her repertoire and hoped that she had used it as well. Besides, she seemed capable enough to strike quickly without a moments notice. Without further ado the Jounin would send a well placed chop to the back of the man's neck and watched as he fell to the ground with a thud. His eyes then shot up to see if the other target was still standing and was ready to lend aid should it be necessary. _________________________________ 1Doton: Iwagakure no Jutsu | Earth Release: Hiding in Rock Technique
