This technique changes earth into fine sand by channelling chakra into it, allowing the user to dig through it like a mole. This effect goes around the body (not just the hands), making it just large enough for a person to move through. The user can pinpoint where they are, despite being underground, by sensing the magnetic forces. They can also sense what is happening on the surface and use that information to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. One can also hide deep in the ground, escaping to a depth where the enemy can't reach. It also appears that after digging, the ground can be returned to its original state, leaving no trace of where the user entered the earth.

As such it is a great strategy for a guerilla, and a likely resort, used quite often for things such as assassination.

The range of the pit is determined by how much chakra is put into the technique and can go to a max of a 75 meter radius.

As time goes on, the viscosity of the quicksand increases, which is the reason it is difficult to escape from. But a person will never sink completely into the quicksand, as it is denser than a human body; they will sink up to their waist and no more, A raiton technique can reduce the holding power of the quicksand, and if the opponent has an ally nearby, that ally can safely pull them out of it with no risk to themselves. If the victim can get a good grip on something, they will be able to slowly pull themselves out of it.
