Members of the Asagao clan have Genjutsu prowess. A majority of the clan members are born with strong control of their mind and senses. This also allows a good many to learn chakra sensing abilities through time.

A majority of their genjutsu techniques were sound based, activated through the vocal cords and movement of the tongue. However, since the Asagao Massacre, the use of that genjutsu has been completely disabled and is even lost for future generations.

Historical Background:

The Asagao clan's ancestry stretches back thousands of years as one of the most powerful and distinctive clans of Kaze no Kuni. They resided in a vast wasteland far from the outskirts of Sunagakure no Sato. The clan was relatively small, preferring the ways of isolation over the bustling city where they were separated in culture. The Asagao people lived happily in the sandy wastelands, living off the creatures and a small watering hole close by.

Music was part of the Asagao people's daily life. The Clan possessed the ability to create melodies that for the longest time were said to be humanly impossible. Their music was unique and harmonic, and attracted many tourists to their small village. The Clan's ability to create sounds to activate Genjutsu was a common talent. The Asagao people were a peaceful people, and never used their abilities for warfare.

However, one man from the village, Asagao Kenji, went rogue, taking the Asagao's clan abilities and taking them too far. Kenji used an over-powering form of the sound Genjutsu and murdered a small town a few miles from where the Asagao clan resided. They had done nothing wrong, and Kenji later commented that "The possibilities of the Asagao Clan are infinite! We could take over Suna with the voice of our people!" His attempts to recruit in a coup had failed. The thousands of years of peace from the Clan was too strong. Kenji was exiled, but the threat was felt from Suna and other villages nearby.

One particular Clan that lived closest to the Asagao Clan took much fear into the massacre by Kenji. They had hundreds of years of rivalry with the Asagao Clan and had much to fear if anyone from their clan were to settle with Kenji's coup or attempted a copy-cat massacre. A small radical group of that Clan raided the Asagao village. Unable to fight back due to thousands of years of peace and not needing Ninja, the Asagao were powerless. Because the Asagao Clan required speech to activate their Genjutsu, the tongues of the people, both old and young, were cut out. This was later known as the Asagao Massacre. Although only a handful of the Clan members were actually killed in the raid, the Jutsu of the Clan would be forever lost because in order to learn the Jutsu, they must first hear it. Without their speech, the Clan's justu would be impossible to pass down to the next generations.

The Asagao Clan left their isolated wasteland and fled to Sunagakure to seek help from their country. The radicalist group that raided their village were punished and the Asagao clan was given free housing, food, and medical care from Sunagakure until they were able to settle fully.

Over the years of the attacks, a form of communication has been made specifically for the survivors of the Asagao Massacre in the form of a jutsu.
