It was about noon, the sun hanging right in the middle of the sky as it beamed down a warm heat on all that it touched. Tetsu was enjoying the decent weather as he slowly strolled through the village on the way to the gates. While most would have been breaking their necks to start a mission the boy wasn't in any rush as he was fairly laid back to the point of almost being lazy when it came to most things, and yet he was one of the best medics in the entire village. Irony? No, of course not. Most people didn't actually know what it was and used the word incorrectly all the time, a small pet peeve of the Chunin.
A half smoked stogie was lodged in the right side of his mouth, though remained unlit. He didn't like to smoke so early in the day as it gave a bad after taste to his lunch. Tetsu shouldn't have been smoking in the first place, of course, especially considering that he knew first hand what the effects were after studying medicine for so long. But it was a habit that he couldn't drop... or rather, that he was was too lazy to drop. It hadn't caused any ill effects as of yet so there was no reason to try anything drastic. Besides, going on a nicotine withdrawal right before a mission had bad idea written all over it.
Speaking of missions, that was where the young man was headed right now. Apparently there were a group of bandits holed in an abandoned mining town that needed to be cleared. They had been terrorizing small towns across the country and someone had finally had enough. Since there were no reports on taking any of them alive Tetsu assumed that they were to kill at all costs. He wasn't a fighter for the most part, especially up close, and was much better suited to take up a support role. Oddly enough they only assigned one other person for the mission, even though there around fifteen bandits total, and their leader was possibly an ex-Chunin. Yorino Hashi was the man's name who was to accompany the Uzumaki on this mission, a Jounin. He had never met the man and knew nothing of his persona. Hopefully he wasn't a strict fellow which would have been a pain, but there was little he could do at this point.
As the gates came into view blue hues scanned the area to see what all was going on. A few people coming in and out, nothing unusual. It donned on the boy that he didn't know what Hashi looked like and would have to wait it out for his partner to find him.

Hashi watched the smoke drift lazily into the air. There was something serene about tobaccos smoke. He could watch it float and float for hours and he wasn't ashamed to admit he actually had. However today was not such a day. The sunlight made it hard to discern the willowy smoke and Hashi had a job to perform. Hashi had a mission. His first one since quitting the ANBU. He had hoped that his first mission would be something along the lines of testing some new academy graduates but fat had different plans. Well Kasumi, their Daimyou, had different plans anyway. He was yet to discern her motive for hiring him as her bodyguard and her sending him away from the village on a mission was not helping. It didn't really make any sense to him. He had heard the many rumours about their Daimyou and, as a member of the ANBU, had once or twice seen something he should not have and he wondered if his reputation as a womaniser had gotten him something of a 'fake' job. The mission itself was somewhat odd too. He and a Medical-focussed C huunin were being sent to deal with a group of bandits who very well might have an ex-chuunin as a leader... It seemed a bit off as if it had been constructed at the last moment by someone who had picked two names at random. Thinking about the what-fors was pointless now. The task just had to be done and that was that. Hashi would have dressed for the occasion flak jacket and all if it hadn't been so damn hot. So Hashi had just decided on a green vest and combats. He wanted to be at least a little camouflaged but not too hot or weighed down. Hashi had neglected to bring any of his ninja tools with him either. Hashi was, at the very least, wearing his headband. It had been fashioned into an impromptu belt but at least it was there. It was the headband that alerted Hashi to the arrival of his partner. He'd also seen a photograph of him when he'd looked over his file. Hashi had looked at the file of every shinobi in the village at some point. As part of his ANBU work and frankly because he enjoyed reading. It was a leisurely exercise. The fact this kid had flaming red hair and that his fie had him down as an Uzumaki didn't hurt his chances either. “Hey, kid.” Hashi hailed the redhead from his spot resting against one of the opened village gates. “Got a light?” Hashi followed up with an odd request. It was an odd request as it was clear to anyone who could see that his pipe was already lit. Word Count: 472

The call out was heard easily and quickly as there wasn't too much other noise to drown it out. A few birds chirping, the insects making whatever noise they made and what few people there were holding personal conversations. Hilarious, actually. It seemed that the village was being just as lazy as the Chunin considering it was midday, but Tetsu wasn't complaining. He would have liked for everyone to slow down their pace a little every once in a while instead of complaining at him to pick his up. Whatever, so long as this guy didn't do the same then there would be no issues.
A single brow raised at the request, but seeing the pipe in the man's mouth helped make sense of things. This guy was a smoker as well, odd to see this many in such proximity of each other. A shinobi, no doubt, as made obvious by both his attire and hitae-ate that was being used as a belt. Odd fashion statement, to say the least, but to each their own. The Uzumaki shuffled a hand in his pocket for a few moments before pulling out a rather large lighter. He had to have it to light such decent sized cigars. Matches and regular sized lighters simply would not do the trick. With a flick of the wrist Tetsu tossed it over to the man as he closed the distance between them. He assumed that was the guy he would be completing this mission with, though nothing was for certain.
It'd be great to have another smoker to chat with, maybe trade some favorites and have a common ground to shoot the shit during this one day trek. "You wouldn't happen to be Yorino Hashi, would you? Looking for this guy I'm supposed ta do this mission with." He asked, blue hues inquisitive. If it wasn't him then maybe this guy would have known where he was, though the chances of that happening were slim to none. Granted, Kusa wasn't all that big a village compared to the Big Five, but it had its fair share of faces.

Hashi managed to make catching the hefty lighter look as easy as a simple stretch. He held the lighter up silently inspecting it. It was simple, unadorned, if a little big. He probably needed it to light such big cigars as the one in his mouth. It was quite impressive to see a youth smoking in such a way though it was clear he had some reservations about it. After a few seconds Hashi said “Here, catch.” and threw the lighter back at Tetsu without even using it. You could tell a lot about a man by his lighter. “You've got the right man which would make you Tetsu. Am I right?” Hashi took this time to properly look the boy up and down. He was Uzumaki alright. The first thing he noticed was the flaming red hair. It was probably the first thing anyone noticed about him. The mark of an Uzumaki. It must be hard, Hashi pondered, to be constantly reminded that you're different from others. Hashi had never had a distinguishing feature like that before. Hashi valued anonymity whenever he could and such flaming red hair obviously would not help. Hashi stretched out like a cat awakening from a nap and stepped forward from the gate. “Nice day for it.” Hashi remarked and strolled out of the village with or without the answer to his first question. “So; what's your story, kid?” Hashi asked after a few seconds accompanying the question with a few puffs of his pipe. “And feel free not to rush. We've got a long walk ahead of us.” They could have ran. They could have done that jumping through the trees thing that most ninja were likened to doing but they didn't have a deadline and Hashi couldn't really be bothered. He had to keep his strength up after all. It seemed he'd be in for quite a fight... Word Count: 323

Odd, asking for a lighter and then not even using it. Was it just some kind of weird joke that the man was playing? Though his next words made sense of things. So this was the person Tetsu would be joining on the mission, and indeed he was a smoker. Well, it actually still didn't make too much sense. Having a cigar that size should have been a clear give away that the Chunin would have had a lighter on him, it was the rule of all smokers. Either way, they had found each other and now it was time to depart.
"Yep, that's me." He replied while noticing the man take in his features. Yet another odd thing, and definitely something one man shouldn't do to another, especially if they were facing each other. Was the man batting for the other team? Not that it really mattered, Tetsu didn't discriminate but he hoped that the man would at least try and be more discrete in the future. Just like that they were off, walking through the gates and heading towards the small town. It was a one day journey so there was definitely no need to rush, and there had been no details given in the report that the bandits would soon be moving locations which was a relief.
"My story?" Tetsu replied inquisitively. He rarely spoke of his past for the sole reason that his red hair gave it all away. What happened to the Uzumakis all those years ago had not faded in the minds of most villages. A clan once revered reduced to refugees because of misguided fear, and the death of many on the hands of multiple villages. "I was born in a refugee camp, oldest of quite a few siblings. Wasn't spectacular but home none the less. One day a group came in and raided the place... I lost my sister. My parents didn't want to take the risk of it happening again and we moved to Kusa." He began, blue eyes shifting to the sky. "I didn't want to be in a position where I couldn't help anyone in a situation like that, so I started training in the medical arts, along with the normal shinobi training. I plan on becoming the Head Medic one day." With that the Chunin was done, at least for now. It was fairly general and if the Jounin wanted to know more he could ask, Tetsu didn't really mind sharing.
"What of you? Being a Jounin means you've had to go through some pretty interesting stuff, right?" He asked, reciprocating the question. This was a long journey after all, so practicing the ebb and flow of conversation could never hurt.

The kid seemed surprised that he'd been asked. Most people were. It was Hashi's turn to be surprised when the kid came out with it gory details and all. Most Shinobi were not so forthcoming. Of course it sort of came with the territory. They were shadowy beings of the night after all. Plus they all had dark secrets. Even Hashi had a few secrets he'd rather keep to himself. Of course he knew anyway. Most of it was in his file and his parent's files and his siblings file. Everyone had a file. Even those who weren't shinobi. They didn't live in the generous Utopian Hidden Leaf after all. The Grass was much more careful about everything even if their Daimyo didn't seem to care much. Hashi took a long puff of his pipe when the boy asked him about his life. His exhale was long and weary. He was quiet for some time. He was quiet for so long in fact that it seemed as if he was ignoring the question altogether. Eventually, however, after some long minutes of silence he replied. “Child prodigy to Genin to Chuunin to Jounin to ANBU to Daimyo's Bodyguard right now. Not done much guarding though. No siblings. Dad died when I was seven. Mother, much more recently...” Hashi may have been giving the abridged version but it was certainly more than he might have usually given to anyone in terms of content. The boy had been considerably open himself though so Hashi was willing to let him in on a little more than usual. Hashi sighed taking in another draw of his pipe releasing it a few moments later in a deep exhale. “You say you're a medic but what else you got?” Hashi asked changing the topic. He needed to know what this kid could do. Though, in all fairness, it kind of looked as if he was being sent to deal with the bandits and the Chuunin had been brought along in case he hurt himself doing it. Word Count: 348

turn me up when you feel low,
To the contrary Testu wasn't taken aback by the response time from Hashi, especially when he noticed that the man was taking a drag from his pipe. The Uzumaki had experienced similar situations in his life when conversations, work, and everything in between were abruptly halted so that he could take a few puffs from his cigar. His easy going attitude prevented the young man from feeling awkward when it happened because it was better than no talking what so ever. Besides, drawing out a conversation on a trip of this length would definitely help make things seem a bit shorter.
What was odd, however, was the abbreviated version of the Jounin's life history that was being shot out at rapid fire speed. Had the man not moments ago told Tetsu to give some detail as this was a long journey? Was it not proper form to take one's own advice if they had the gall to give it to others? Not that it mattered much, if conversation ended the Uzumaki was perfectly capable of walking in silence. So this was Kasumi's bodyguard which may as well have meant personal sex slave considering her vivacious appetite for human flesh. Tetsu had crossed paths with her once before, completely by accident of course even though he had been napping in her office. She hardly seemed like one who was in need of a guard but that probably wasn't her decision in the end. "Kasumi's bodyguard? Quite the interesting woman she is." He replied, allowing the words to be taken in any way. Her reputation definitely preceded her and she was almost always the object of one rumor or another, so being tasked to always be at her side probably came with its fair share of gossip as well.
What else did Tetsu have? He supposed the man meant in terms of fighting capabilities. Simply put the young man wasn't a fighter in the traditional sense. He preferred to sit back and play a supplementary roll, and up close fighting was nowhere near his forte. However, the Chunin could hold is own to a degree. "Some Katon and Futon techniques, but that's about it. I'm not what you would call a front line type of guy." Tetsu stated with a small grin. He wasn't ashamed of having lack luster skill in Taijutsu and Genjutsu as it was balanced out by his skills in elemental Ninjutsu. Plus, the Chunin was arguably one of the best medics in the entire village and had been researching on new medical techniques prior to this mission.

Interesting, was perhaps the nicest way of putting it. He hadn't actually worked with her yet but he was sure it was bound to be an interesting experience... “Katon.” Hashi repeated aloud the edge of his mouth curling into a half grin. It was always interesting to meet another with an affinity to the flame. They were never quite as focussed on it as he was but it was usually interesting to hear the many different opinions people had on the element. “And fuuton too, huh? Well that's certainly an interesting combination. Do you happen to know any of those offensive medical techniques?” Hashi had once fought a man who could use his medical ninjutsu to harm rather than heal. He hadn't been altogether too difficult. Hashi had learnt to keep his distance. *** And so Hashi questioned Tetsu in a likewise manner for some time. He asked him about certain jutsu, he quizzed him on strategies, he asked some more bout Tetsu's personal life and such but, in the end, silence prevailed. There were only so many topics to be discussed after all. Eventually they thick wood that surrounded the path began to lessen and lessen until it fell away completely leaving them on an open dirt path. The sun was even fiercer here and the land was hard and dry. It was not hard to guess why the town the bandits were using was abandoned. The land was dead and whatever those miners had been digging up was most likely gone too. Unfortunately for them it made sneaking up on the town somewhat harder as there was little in the way of foliage to cover them. Hashi didn't vocalise this concern but rather strode onwards. The town came into view and still he strode as if he was just going to walk into the town bold as brass. The town itself was an old, rickety affair. A few wooden buildings lined up along an old dirt road. Some of the older buildings looked as if a passing breeze was going to knock them down at any second. In this heat however there were very little breezes. Hashi suddenly stopped some way from the town. He held out a hand to his side stopping Tetsu. “Do you have any explosive tags?” Word Count: 392

turn me up when you feel low,
Seeing the grin on the man's face was a dead giveaway that he too probably practiced Katon techniques, more than likely more so than Tetsu. He enjoyed the power that fire gave him, as he wasn't all that gifted physically, but more so because of the options it enabled when combined with Futon techniques. The Chunin had practiced a few combinations but nothing extensive and working in the hospital on a daily basis took away from the time he had to experiment; perhaps this mission would give him the opportunity to test out a few things. Tetsu shook his head at the man's next question about offensive medical techniques. If there was anything he was lacking in the Ninjutsu department it was Iryo-ninjutsu that hurt rather than healed. Granted, he had never come across a situation where he needed them, and his reasoning for even going into the medical field in the first place was to help people, though perhaps researching said techniques wouldn't be such a bad idea.
****
The rest of the journey went by slowly but surely, with conversation shifting back and forth between the two. Their leisurely pace prevented the need for taking rest stops which was a plus. Sure, running the entire way would have maybe got them there a bit faster though the time they would need to rest would halt their progress severely. Either way, the duo had arrived and were only moments from reaching their ultimate destination. The lush foliage gave way to a substantially more barren landscape that put the old, wooden buildings in clear view. It was the perfect hideout, to be honest, with buildings so old and decrepit that they looked like they could fall apart if one so much as sneezed at them.
The Chunin stopped abruptly when Hanshi put out a hand to halt their movement. It had seemed that he had spotted something that the boy had not, already showing his worth as a Jounin. "Yeah, got about ten. What are you thinking?" He asked, eyes shifting from one building to the next for any signs of life. Though the two were still a fair distance from actually entering the town it was best to think up a plan now before getting right in the thick of things.

“Well,” Hashi sad thoughtfully puffing on his pipe “ All of these buildings are a hair away from collapsing and since we can't see anybody from here then most of the bandits must be inside said buildings with three or four lookouts posted outside. If we take these buildings down before they can react then most of their force will be dealt with already. Normally I would suggest waiting until dark but from what I've heard of these guys they're night raiders so everybody must be sleeping now during the day. Since we can't wait for night we need a distraction while somebody sets explosive tags on the buildings. Since my techniques are loud and fiery anyway what I'll do is basically run in, dispatch all of the lookouts and cause mayhem. You sneak in, plant the tags, retreat to a safe distance and kaboom. We go home, get some ramen and sleep easier knowing we've made the nights safer.” Hashi explained his ramshackle plan between puffs of his pipe. For being outnumbered almost eight to one Hashi wasn't taking this nearly as serious as he might be if he was planning on attacking Genin. For some reason Hashi just didn't take people without magic powers very seriously... Maybe it was because Hashi could actually think of one Jutsu that could more or less take out the entire town. “What do you think, Tetsu? Don't hold back either. I'm not one of those folks that asks you to speak your mind and then punishes you for it. In fact I encourage a better plan if you have one.” Hashi asked somewhat aware his plan sounded a bit touch and go. Several variables could go wrong and most of them were more likely to result in Tetsu coming into harms way. Though it wasn't a mission parameter or anything Hashi would definitely prefer both of them to come out of this as unscathed as possible. Word Count: 334

turn me up when you feel low,
Tetsu listened intently on the man's plan for dispatching the bandits. He wanted to both take out the lookouts and destroy some of the already weakened infrastructure at the same time, which would probably take out a few more of the bandits. Indeed the Jounin would be able to cause a much better distraction than the Chunin, so it would be on the Uzumaki to plant all the explosive notes. He only had about ten on him, and imagined that Hashi had somewhere around the same number, so placement would be key.
There was one thing the young man wasn't all too fond of though, and that was executing this during the day. It was true that the bandits were night owls and did most of their dastardly deeds when the sun set, but sacrificing stealth for a quicker trip home didn't sit well with the boy at all. However, with all the attention placed on the Jounin it would be a long shot for any of those people to spot Tetsu as he went around placing the tags, and assuming that Hashi could hold his own then there wasn't a terrible risk. Besides, Tetsu's healing techniques would prove useful should the other man injure himself.
"Sounds good to me, but I only have ten explosive notes on me so I'll need to borrow some of yours if we want to get all these buildings down." Tetsu figured that it would take about three notes on the support beams of each building to do the trick considering how these structures were so worn down by a combination of time and the elements. After that would come the clean up of any surviving bandits who were lucky enough not to get trapped underneath all the rubble. This was a fairly straight forward mission in the end, and thinning out their numbers unexpectedly would surely serve to make it even easier, that was assuming that rumor of a shinobi leader proved to be false.

“Aha...” Hashi grinned sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck. “I kinda forgot mine. Ha ha, didn't think I'd need 'em.” There was a bit of an awkward silence after that before Hashi began again. “Well I've learnt my lesson on that one but about the task at hand. You said you knew some fire techniques. These buildings are made out of old, dried out wood. You stick the tags to the biggest, least volatile ones, retreat to a safe distance out of harms way and just set as much on fire as possible. This place is abandoned so as much collateral damage as possible would be nice. Keep some of that chakra for healing though.” Hashi took a deep puff of his pipe. “Ready?” Hashi asked bringing his hands together to perform the hand seals for the Multiple Fire Clone technique. Five Hashi's appeared pipes and all. Hashi grinned “It's distracting time.” The Hashi's leapt forward in a display of speed one might not have thought was in the lazy Hashi. The Fire Clones began to all do the same handseals while Hashi himself worked on a different one. This distraction was going to be explosive to say the least. “Hey! You! You-' s'!?” A skinny, dishevelled man steps out from the side of a building. The Hashi's ignore him getting closer and closer to the town. It's not long before another bandit appears from some nook or cranny and another. The Fire Clones suddenly let fly a volley of Fire Bullets. Little balls of fire hail into the town in the general direction of the bandits. Some are scorched. Others clothes catch on fire. Some of the bullets hit a few of the buildings but are not hot enough to start a real fire. All of the Hashi's slow down and start to fan out a bit more. The fire clones are preparing even more Fire Bullets the real Hashi weaves together the Fire Dragon Flame Bullet. A blazing dragon of flame rips out of his mouth the very sight of such a powerful attack causing one or two bandits to lose their legs and fall on their asses. Hashi does not level the dragon at a person though but a large building he could see bandits waking in panic from beds through the window. The dragon smashes into the wooden building with full force causing some of it to blast apart and the rest to be engulfed in a blazing inferno. That ought to get their attention... turn me up when you feel low,
Of course things were to good to be true, and of course this mission would not go as smoothly as Tetsu believed. How could one not bring the proper tools on a mission? Wasn't it standard practice to just walk around with them anyway? The Uzumaki sighed as he realized that he had finally met someone lazier than himself. "Forgot... them?" He questioned, slightly irritated. Their plan would have to change up a bit as the ten exploding notes the Chunin had on him wouldn't be enough to bring down all the buildings that he wanted. However, the Jounin's words about how old the buildings were brought up a good point. Considering the wood was probably one dry rub from catching fire any Katon techniques would easily set them on fire.
He watched as his partner created five clones made out of fire, quite a bit of chakra had to be used to make them and sending that many bodies out there would cause more than a simple distraction. Hopefully this man had some sort of plan because his presence alone would alert the entire group of bandits before Tetsu even got a chance to place all of his tags. In the blink of an eye the man and his clones had set off into the town and begun releasing a volley of fire techniques that indeed caught the attention of the lookouts and caused quite the commotion, perhaps this would work out after all. With a sigh the Uzumaki bit down on his cigar before quickly heading into the town, being sure to stay out of the main line of sight and began placing explosive tags on the buildings. With the limited number he was only able to place two on the larger buildings and one on the smaller ones.
Quickly yet silently the Chunin went from building to building, making sure to avoid the numerous flame volleys that were being spewed out; no easy feat to say the least. After about ten minutes all the tags had been placed and Tetsu retreated to a position outside the town. With a single seal all ten tags blew causing the support beams on six buildings to give way and the buildings to collapse on themselves. Normally that wouldn't have been the case but taking into account how old they were it was almost as if they wanted to fall. The flames from the explosion also caused a few of the collapsed buildings to catch fire, and the old dry wood began burning with ease.
The screams of those trapped inside could be heard for a few moments before being drowned out by the sound of burning wood, and in total eight bandits had been caught in the explosions. If Hashi had brought his tags then there would have been little doubt that more could have been taken out, but a little extra fighting never hurt anyone. Well, that's what someone normal would say, Tetsu on the other hand wanted to avoid direct confrontation at all costs, though it seemed that would not be the case this go-round.

The clones soon rat out of chakra. They only had a limited reserve each which was little in comparison to what the real Hashi had. The clones were not done yet though as they moved in to engage bandits in hand-on-whatever ramshackle weapon they owned combat. A few poofed as the more skilled bandits managed to get a weapon in edgewise but said bandits found themselves in deap heat as the clones turned back into flame before dissipating into the wind. One unlucky bandit had been using a naginata and when it went through the clone it lit up in a sudden blaze scorching the bandits hand cripplingly. Hashi himself was keeping out of close-range wherever he could blasting a stranger or two with a flame bullets should they wander astray. He had been starting to worry that the bandits were arriving faster then they were being dispatched and then it happened; a mighty bang and several buildings collapsed in on themselves. “Ha ha!” Hashi exclaimed taking a break to puff on his pipe. “I love it when a plan comes together.” Performing the necessary hand seals Hashi activated the Slow Burn technique. Anybody he hit with his fists from then on were likely to receive minor burns. With this in mind Hashi charged forward at the nearest enemy, sidestepped a panicked swing and hit the bandit right in the gut. There was a sizzling redound like a cattle being branded and the man fell to the ground in pain. A swift, sure kick to the temple brought him down. Another bandit, this one armed with a large club leapt at him. He was too slow and with a flurry of handseals a wall of flame shot up in front of him just as the man stepped into it. His charred husk fell to the ground. Almost as soon as the flames had gone he was jumping through them to deliver a myriad of fists to another guys gut throwing him away with a final uppercut. The fact that he was burning the guy too was just overkill. Hashi grinned a lion's grin and moved on. He was being uncharacteristically incautious today... turn me up when you feel low,
It was quite the amazing sight, to be honest, watching all of those buildings crumble in a heap. Though he was a healer at heart Tetsu could enjoy a nice explosion every now and then. It was only a matter of moments until the clones began dispersing in fiery fashion, their chakra being limited. Using that many techniques in such a short time span meant from the beginning that they would only be around for a while, and the few bandits that had been able to put up a fight had gotten to a couple of them as well.
Seeing the wall of fire rise up gave away the position of Hashi, and he seemed to be having a great time causing a ridiculous distraction. Sure enough it drew nearly all the attention to them, including that of the bandits leader. In a flash a jet of water headed towards one of the buildings and extinguished the flames that engulfed it, and the same occurred for all the buildings that were aflame. With a leap an average sized man appeared before Hashi. Black hair, dark eyes and wearing gear that seemed a combination of hired hand and shinobi gear.He was Tsurugi Nagdo, leader of the bandits, and the distaste in his eyes was pointed directly toward Hashi.
"Ay you, must have a death wish coming all the way out here by yerself causing a ruckus." He stated, his face giving an indication of his readiness to fight. Tetsu could see this entire seen unfolding from his position and figured that it was only a matter of time until the leader would show his face. He wasn't too pleased that the rumors of a shinobi leader were true, and hoped that this mission being B-rank was due to the number of bandits. Alas that would not be the case and it seemed that the two were actually in for a fight. As to not get in the way the Chunin would keep his position until he saw fit to move in.
this melody was meant for you,
