Tien shaves his head regularly as his hair used to always get in the way of his third eye. Unfortunately this fact greatly highlights his third eye to others and can sometimes be the cause of ridicule. His third eye rests a little up from his nose roughly in the space between his other two eyes. He is usually garbed in a Ki the two colours of the village (rock brown and red) with his Iwagakure Headband tied around his upper arm. He never wears headgear but has, once or twice, cracked out a balaclava with three eye holes in it. His mother made it for him. ► Mental Assessment Tien is a gentle soul. He has a love for the earth and all of the many things that inhabit it. He once had issues dealing with the need for violence in the Shinobi world and has since seen the light to a degree. He was born during the reign of Sandaime Tsuchikage Gako Ito the Corrupted Puppet. The corrupt Tsuchikage brought poverty and hostility to the once Utopian village. Luckily Tien never had to deal with poverty first hand. As members of the esteemed Saito Clan his family were kept in relative comfort even as the people around them stooped lower and lower into the mud of the Corrupted Tsuchikage's rule. Tien was born to Miya Saito and Hiroshima Tanzen. However Tien's father, Hiroshima a Chuunin Shinobi, had died during Tien's pregnancy. It was a training accident; a rogue technique performed by a peer who could not control it. Tien and his mother were taken in and provided for by a cousin. The Saito Clan were close knit and protective of their peers. As a child Tien showed great promise. He was born with the Clan's distinctive third eye which was a rare and blessed gift. He was also rather bold and inquisitive not afraid to ask the difficult 'why's which got him into some trouble every now then. There was always something a bit different about him though. Some called it a touch of wisdom, others thought he was odd. Everything was more or less fine though until he joined the Academy. Those in the important clans of the village were ostracised by the children of the average, everyday people who had come to believe that it was the Clan's fault for the corruption of the Sandaime Tsuchikage. Sometimes the pupil's angst would turn into actual physical violence. This greatly perturbed Tien. Once when a boy decided to take out his frustration on the quiet and unassuming Tien he found the boy completely unwilling to defend himself. Tien just stood there while the boy hit him again and again. When he arrived home beaten and bruised his mother asked why he had let someone do this to him. Tien had replied “He was sad because his family is sad and if I hit him back he would just be more sad and he would pass on his sadness to more people so if he makes me sad and I don't pass it on I'm making less people sad.. If I take his sadness and not pass it on then it's like I'm making people happy.” This problem grew bigger as he progressed through the Academy. Not the other boys picking on him as it was not satisfying to pick on someone who doesn't defend themselves so the students learned to leave him alone. The problem was his blatant pacifism. It was just not very shinob-like. When they were practising against a partner Tien more or less refused to hit them or held back as much as possible. However as he mastered the required techniques and scored highly in the Exam they had no choice but to allow him to graduate passing on the torch, and the blame when they suspected things would go south, to his new Team Leader. Roshi Sensai. Roshi was a kind, intelligent Jounin perhaps a little too old to still be in the game. His affinities were Earth and Air with a heavy grounding in taijutsu. He recognised the gentle soul within Tien and nurtured it. Roshi used logic to guide Tien into doing and acting in ways he would have have usually refused. It was not quite manipulation. It was more like Roshi was showing Tien how to be what he wanted to be without having to sacrifice the way of the ninja. With Roshi's guidance Tien learned how to subdue rather than kill his enemies to which his natural affinity, air, was particularly useful. Tien was quick but strong so Roshi taught him the Strong Fists art of Taijutsu. At the same time Tien was still undergoing lessons from Saito clan members to develop his chakra control so as to allow his natural sensory perception to grow. Everything was well. So well that when their team tried out for the Chuunin Exams in Tien's fourteenth year they passed. However tragedy struck in the same year. Roshi had secretly been working with the revolutionaries deposing the Puppet Tsuchikage. In one of the final skirmishes of the conflict Roshi was killed. This broke Tien's heart. Tien fell into a depression which caused his skills to droop significantly. This caused him to be dropped from the Chuunin Task Force he was in and placed as a Proctor's assistant. This punishment actually turned out to be the defining moment of Tien's life. Teaching, as it turned out, was something of his true calling. He loved brnging hope and inspiration to others as Roshi had to him and he was good at it too. The best part of all was that he no longer had to hurt people any more. Sure he was occasionally sent to replace someone on a task force but he took that role happily knowing that it was never permanent. The next day or the day after he would be back in a classroom enriching young minds again.

Tien is very intelligent and thoughtful as any good teacher ought to be. Teaching is a lot like problem solving. You visualise your problem, or your subject matter, and you have to try to find the best possible way to approach it to solve your problem, or present your subject in a light that everyone can understand.

Over the years since Iwagakure has been founded it has been discovered that Tien's clan is most common in Iwagakure to produce shinobi that are born with a sixth sense to sense the chakra around them and tell it apart from other chakra sources albeit with a bit of difficulty.

While this is a rare occurrence, there are times when people born into this clan are born with a third eye. Those people born with the third eye are typically more skilled sensors than other members of their clan, however have a sensitivity to light. Tien is one of these members.
