It is their military might that provides the country with the steely determination to survive in a world gone mad. When his father died Zenpachi was the rightful heir but he insisted that it was only fair to allow his brother a chance. They fought and he won. Hence Zenpachi has held the position ever since. ► Political Standpoint Zenpachi will do anything to create peace. He sees the suffering that the Shinobi have inflicted upon the common people and will do all in his power to stop this. If this means siding with those who have brought suffering into the world then so be it. However if the Shinobi Villages are not prepared for peace than they hold no place in Zenpachi's future: one way or another. The man was the very picture of military ideals and he ran every aspect of his life just like another day on the battlefield. He drilled discipline, duty, honour and an iron will into the young boy. The Yamamoto Clan had served the Land of Iron for many years and it was Zanpachi's job to ensure this would persevere in the future. The corruption of Shinobi and the infernal Tailed Beasts would always seek to destroy them for being different and not playing in their selfish games. There was only one way to do this, his father said, and that was through strict training. Zanpachi could wield a sword from the time he was five years old. Zanpachi hung on his father's every word; every speech was another insight into the mechanics of the cruel, harsh world around him. He learned of the corruption of the Shinobi world and the true samurai way. Zanpachi however was a twin. This caused him some agravation when he was younger. His twin, Zaraki, was impetuous, brash and disrespectful. Whenever father was having a good speech Zaraki would always say something or slouch and father would have to discipline him. It was really Zanpachi that suffered as he rarely continued the speech after he had disciplined his impetuous brother. Zanpachi's dedication and hard work paid off for him though. He was always a little better than his brother. He would casually joke that it was the three second break between his birth and his brother Forging Destiny Zanpachi had been ready to forge his sword for years. Ever since the moment he picked up a practice katana he had felt at home. To have a sword he could call his own was all he dreamed of and, for many months, he had been secretly researching how to forge a katana. When the twins reached their eighth birthday their father finally took them to the secret Yamamoto Forge. His brother got to work right away in his usual rush to mess things up. Zanpachi took time and care in forging his own. He knew that the key to a trusty blade was to forge not only the metal but a piece of yourself into it. He forged his heart and soul into that katana and, while Zaraki may have already had three failed attempts under his wing, Zanpachi was the first to create a true katana. It's craftsmanship was near perfect for a novice blacksmith nevermind an eight year old. When he went to show his father, however, he didn't have any time to admire it as he was busy instructing Zaraki. After this event Zanpachi wasn't exactly the same with his brother. He did his best to keep up appearances but frankly Zanpachi was done with his failure of a brother or, at least, so he thought. Several months afterword they had been allowed to sit in on their father's daily council meeting (a great honour for Zanpachi but Zaraki was already acting up) when an elder Samurai brought in a Samurai accused of murder. The council listened to his story and eventually decided that he would be executed but, as a samurai, he would be allowed to commit hara-kiri. However before the man could be taken out of the room his brother had some sort of a fit of anger and plunged his blade deep into the man's lungs before anyone could say anything about it. In the resulting chaos nobody noticed that instead of the usual frown Zanpachi wore whenever Zaraki did something bad he was actually wearing a small smile. That man hadn't deserved to die by his own terms. After that Zanpachi went back to the way he usually was with his brother. He didn't agree with what his brother had done but he saw now that his heart was in the right place. His brother was a blunt instrument striking out at everything in sight. If only someone sharpened him than he would be a great man, of this Zanpachi was certain.
