At what point do people know who you are; just from having heard stories and rumors? Everyone would probably know the Kages and the Hanchos, but what else?
For example, Zabuza knew about Kakashi from his reputation while Kakashi had seen Zabuza's entry in the bingo book; so both of them had a good idea of each other's abilities before even fighting.
The reason I would consider this important to know is for....metagame purposes, I suppose. How much someone should know about your character at their first interaction. The kind of answer that I'm looking for would be something along the lines of "A/S-rank ninja are known worldwide in some form while B-ranks could be known outside of the surrounding area if they've done something of note". (By 'the kind of answer I'm looking for' doesn't mean I want someone to pop in and say 'Sure, why not.' I meant, in that format. I guess.)

If i had to say something about what others would know of you, i'll say that would be completely reliant on "achievements" in the OOC history rather than Rank. An reason why is Kakuzu or a better example: Pain/Nagato, he was S-Rank, no one knew not a single bit of his abilities at all, not even his own people, excluding that of Madara, Obito, Konan, and himself. So yes, achievements and what you "did" to achieve those achievements ability-wise. I'm sure many people assumed the Sannin just had amazing ninjutsu but didn't know the specifics, just that they were Kage-Level with a huge legend. If Jiraiya sported his Sage Mode in every battle, like A did his RnY or Kakashi with his Sharingan, then his abilities would be known and everyone would be like "so that's Senjutsu" but no one knew.
So, you should really just use your better judgment of what your character should or would know about another character, and if you have questions or think it's impossible to know something, then ask the creator of that character so you can properly "access" and "decide" what your characters knows. If they have objections of your knowledge, then they can talk to you to edit them or write up an objection thread to settle their know-how, as it varies too much for us to give a "definitive" measure of what your character should know about other characters.
[P.S: Sorry for the many quotations. lol.]
Edit: Also, most of Kakashi's knowledge of Zabuza would've came from his Bingo Book, like history achievements and whatnot, but most of the abilities he assumed Zabuza had was generic SSM traits.
