He was currently standing in the middle of Konoha's thoroughfare, both annoyed that he was there and annoyed that he was annoyed at having to do this. It was just so... time consuming for a mere meaningless gesture. Still, Sato felt compelled to carry out this task set forth by himself, forcing his feet forward towards a very particular store, nestled among the many that littered this street.
The man entered the Yamanaka's flower shop and shuffled over to the counter. He was wearing his usual robes with the Uchiha crest emblazoned on every side, allowing him to fold his arms over each other to hide his hands in the opposite sleeves, eyes slowly running over the various flora on either side of the store. Despite his fairly comprehensive knowledge in most fields, flowers were one thing that eluded him. Really, most information relating to aesthetics went straight over the Uchiha's head, whether through willful ignorance or simply an inability to understand the 'finer' things in life. When he finally reached the counter, he let out another little sigh, not bothering to look at whoever it was that was stationed behind it, "I require a bouquet of white flowers. The kind doesn't particular matter. Nor does the smell... or appearance... or anything else, really. You know, if they're not white, I suppose that's fine too." It was clear that Sato didn't particularly wish to be here, especially not any longer than was absolutely necessary. [Dialogue Color]: Text [Word Count]: [276/2,500]

The team wasn't doing anything, she didn't have any missions to do or Uchihas to bother (not even cute ones). Inori lounged behind the counter of the Yamanaka flower shop, reading up on plant uses, an area of study she tended to neglect in favor of more, well, exciting things, like learning the clan's hiden or even stuff like tree walking and other things of that nature. Anything was more exciting than reading this old, musty book about every plant under the sun. Anything. Made even worse by the fact that she had only had one customer since she'd taken over for her mother early this morning. It was a slow day for flower sales. Dreadfully slow, in fact, and she was tempted to find her older brother, drag him into the shop, then leave to go do something else, but her father would tan her hide if she left while she was supposed to be working, even if she got someone to take her place. What a surprise it was when none other than Uchiha Satori himself came shuffling into the shop, looking like it was literally killing him to be in here. She stifled a snicker and put the book down, watching him look at all the different varieties of flowers they had. If he had a question, he would eventually shuffle his way over and ask - which he soon did. He didn't even seem to realize who was working, and she started to wonder just what was wrong with him. He definitely wasn't acting like his usual snarky bastard Uchiha self. "What a specific request, Uchiha. Luckily for you, I've got just the thing... They're not for a girlfriend, are they? I doubt that you could get one with that hair, but... I suppose stranger things have happened."She didn't wait for an answer before sliding off the stool she was perched on and going to get the flowers that had immediately jumped to her mind when the Uchiha requested a white bouquet - lilies and camellia. White lilies represented purity and chastity, and camellia could have one of several meanings, including true love or admiration. So if he had somehow managed to snag a girl, and she was flower-savvy, she would probably appreciate it, even if the Uchiha himself didn't. "I'll even make you a deal. Tell me what's up and why you need the flowers, and I'll give you a discount."words 427 tags satori notes 427/2500 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

But aside from that single moment of hesitation, there was no further hint of recollection. His gaze drifted back to the counter and the girl standing there, but he didn't make any attempt to address her directly, He merely waited in silence for her to return. In truth, the flowers weren't for anyone in particular. Although the girl was choosing them based on traits associated to the flowers by some unknown botanist, the true reason that Sato had asked for white flowers is for what the color symbolized- death. "There should be... thirty-six." His voice was level, almost monotone. He wouldn't respond to her prodding or inquiries, instead choosing to simply take the bouquet of flowers once the girl was finished gathering them. Once they were in his possession, he would slowly fish out a small stack of ryo from his robes and place it on the counter, overpaying for the flowers by a very fair amount before turning and heading for the door, gripping the bouquet so tightly that some of the stems snapped.
After leaving the flower shop, he started down the street yet again, this time heading south-east towards the outskirts of the city. His destination was the third training field, the place where he had first met his Genin squad- and where the memorial to the fallen was located. The trip there was largely uneventful if not slow as the Uchiha shuffled along, driven by some sense of purpose. Sato made this trip every year on his birthday. Today was the day that he turned thirty-one, marking his seventh excursion out to the field. One who observed the Uchiha might think him strange, choosing to sit in front of a stone by himself for his birthday instead of spending that time with friends and family... but in truth, he was spending it with friends; the only way that he was able. When he finally reached the monument, he tossed the bouquet at the stone's base, slowly letting his eyes drift across the faceplate where the names of the fallen were carved. Akimichi Choatsu, Uchiha Sahiro, Yamanaka Inoucha, Sarutobi Genzu, Sarutobi Yahu, and a good deal of others caught his eye, his cold gaze hovering over the name before moving to the next in the list that he recognized. Once he was finished, Satori smiled softly and closed his eyes as he sensed a presence behind him. And sure enough, a man and a woman were walking along the path, headed straight for the stone... and the Uchiha.

He had had absolutely no reaction whatsoever to her comment about his hair. Considering that he had puffed up and gotten really irritated the other day when she told him it looked similar to a duck's ass... There had to be something wrong with him, and with the way he was acting, there was no way she was going to get it out of the man himself. He dropped a wad of ryo on the counter, took the flowers, and headed out the door before she could give him back the excess. Rolling her eyes, she put enough ryo to cover the bouquet into the register and put the rest in her pocket. She wrote a note in case her mother or father came into the shop and wondered why she wasn't there, locked up shop, flipped their 'open' sign to 'closed,' and headed out to find the damn Uchiha. She just wanted to give him his money back. There wasn't any interest in what was going on with him or anything like that. Not at all. He certainly hadn't managed to grow on her just a little bit. Nope. He was so distracted that Inori didn't think she would have to be all that sneaky to follow him to wherever he was going. Indeed, she was able to trail him with relative ease, and she doubted he would notice even if she made an obnoxiously loud noise or something. When he settled himself in front of the memorial stone, she realized why he might be a little.. off today. Clearly, this was the anniversary of some event that had resulted in the death of someone the Uchiha cared about. Inori was peeking at him around the trunk of a large tree, just watching and waiting to see if he would do anything more than just sit at the stone. words 322 tags satori notes 749/2500 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

If she wanted to join him, then so be it. However, once he realized that two others were approaching him as he stood at the stone, he sighed softly, not wanting to have to explain what would surely happen next to the girl. When he noted that the man was within a few feet of him, Sato finally started to turn around... only for his face to meet with the man's fist, slamming the Uchiha back into the memorial stone.
He raised one arm and held it against the stone for support, but didn't bother trying to move away, instead letting his body slowly slide down the face of the monument. A thin trickle of blood ran down the side of his mouth, having bitten his tongue from the force of the punch, which dripped down his chin and onto his white robes, leaving a small blotch of crimson at the collar. The man reared back, getting ready to punch Sato again when the woman suddenly grabbed his arm, holding him back. The man looked back at the woman and the two exchanged a glance as the woman spoke, "Stop. He's not worth it." The man grimiced and spat at the ground between Satori's legs before turning away and leaving with the woman in tow. Sato leaned back against the stone, looking up at the sky as he sighed deeply. After a few moments, when the couple had left, he finally called out, "You can come out now, Inori. I know you're there."

Some man had just walked up and punched the Uchiha right in his face. Now, on any other occasion, the girl probably would have pointed and laughed and made fun of him and whatnot. But, being that Satori was out of sorts and clearly upset about something and was here mourning, she felt a little bad just having watched it happen. And she certainly didn't feel like laughing at him. She kind of felt like punching the guy that had just punched the Uchiha. He wasn't growing on her. He. Was. Not. The woman managed to stop the man she was with from punching Satori again. The Uchiha was leaning against the monument, a bit of blood trickling down his face, and to be honest, she was a little worried. Torn between a desire to just keep watching and stay out of this... whatever this thing was that was going on, and wanting to go see why someone had just punched the Uchiha and if he was okay, Inori sighed. Total pain in the ass. She nearly jumped when he spoke. So he had noticed her after all. "Ehe..." Inori moved out from behind the tree and headed over to the man and the stone, trying not to look like she cared about the Uchiha or his feelings. "You mind telling me what the hell just happened?" Although he could probably tell that she was concerned, because she wasn't cracking a joke or being sarcastic at him. "No matter how much I try to deny it, you're kind of growing on me. Like a fungus." she muttered. "You might as well tell me what's going on, because I'm not going to leave you alone until you do. Just so you know."words 311 tags satori notes 1060/2500 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

He wondered how he was going to explain all this to Inori, but figured just to be straight with her- no point in sugar coating it. After all, this is something that she should hear anyway. That all Genin should hear. He waited until she asked the predictable question and shrugged half halfheartedly, pointing over his shoulder with his thumb towards one of the names that he'd looked over earlier; Sarutobi Yahu. "That was their son. I killed him." Sato slowly raised a hand to his chest and lazily formed a few one handed seals to emphasize his point, "Tiger, Dragon, Ram, Dog, Tiger, boom." The reason he felt he had to point it out so clearly is because he didn't want Inori to get the idea that he was taking blame, saying that he 'killed' the boy when he'd simply lead the mission that he died on or something. No, he had personally incinerated Yahu.
Satori slowly rose to his feet, still smiling softly. He 'grew' on her? Considering who her father was, he was surprised that she wasn't already throwing racial epithets his way, as per usual. The Uchiha turned back to look down at the stone, his eyes hovering over the bouquet that he'd accidentally crushed when he was knocked against the rock. "One flower for every life that I've taken from Konoha. In one way or another." He turned his head towards Inori, but his eyes were closed, "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. That... is the true fate of a Shinobi."

"What happened? I mean, why did you kill him?" Inori figured that the boy had done something - logically, she didn't think Satori would kill another Konoha shinobi just because, or for some kind of frivolous reason. At least, she hoped the military police captain didn't just kill kids for the hell of it. One flower for every life he'd taken from Konoha. Thirty-six flowers, thirty-six people. But what did that mean? She had a feeling he didn't want to talk about all of them, and she wasn't going to ask, but at the same time she couldn't help but be curious. Were those thirty-six people good or bad? Were they proof that even the healthiest, strongest tree had a sickness within, to use a shitty tree pun, or was Satori just kind of fucked up, or was it a mix? Maybe he thought she would villainize him for what he'd just told her. But Inori had a little more sense than that. Maybe he wasn't perfect, maybe he'd killed when he shouldn't have or something, but hell - no one was perfect. Everyone made mistakes. It was how you learned from those mistakes that mattered, and she was pretty sure that he'd learned something from his experiences. "Don't get too down on yourself, Uchiha. Maybe you've done something wrong sometime in your life, but that alone doesn't make you a villain." She was trying to comfort him, if only to get him to stop moping like a typical Uchiha bastard. words 305 tags satori notes 1365/2500 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

Of course, Sato remembered the incident quite clearly, but... he wasn't quite ready to share had happened to the girl just yet. One day soon she would know what it really meant to be a ninja, but that way wasn't today. Instead, Sato merely shrugged in response, "I felt like it. Why else would someone do something? That's a silly question, Inori." His gaze turned towards the crushed flowers and he chuckled softly, "I suppose that's appropriate for them. Ruined flowers for ruined lives." He looked towards the girl before turning away from the stone, flicking the blood from his chin away with his thumb before sliding his hands into the robe's pockets. "You're right, Inori. That alone doesn't make me a villain." He gave her a sad smile, offering a slight shrug, "It's everything else that does, too."
He started walking straight ahead, moving a hand behind his head to rub there, scratching gently, "Let's go, Inori. I'll get you something to eat." In truth, he really just wanted something for himself, but there was no reason not to bring the girl along. Unless, of course, she had a prior engagement elsewhere.

Did he really think that she was going to buy that explanation? "I killed him because I felt like it," yeah, sure, whatever, Uchiha. "If you didn't want to tell me, you could have just said so. You don't have to make up some dumb reason, Uchiha." she pointed out, arms crossed over her chest. No matter how bad he was feeling, she wasn't going to take any bullshit from him. Or she just might have to punch him too. She really didn't get why he kept calling himself a villain. There wasn't a single shinobi in the world that hadn't done something bad, and as far as Inori was concerned, he was alright so long as he wasn't running around doing the whole rape, murder, and pillage thing. Well, he was alright for an Uchiha, anyway. "Eh. Getting down on yourself isn't going to make anything better, y'know."Inori considered just letting him go on by himself - if he wanted to mope, he could do it by himself - but hey, she wasn't one to turn down free food when the opportunity arose. So she fell into step alongside the Uchiha, remaining silent for once in her life. Interestingly, this was the first time she had noticed just how tall he was - almost a foot taller than she was. Freaking Uchihas on growth hormones. After a while, she glanced up at him, unable to deal with the silence any longer. "So, what do you do in your free time besides mope and lure teenage girls into your lair?" She was half joking and half serious; despite him being a bastard Uchiha, she did legitimately care about him. But just a little. A very, very, very little bit. Nothing more than polite interest, really. words 310 tags satori notes 1675/2500 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

Although hypocritical considering his own attitude, he preferred the company of those who would wear their heart on their sleeve. He simply offered a halhearted shrug and looked off to the side, "Maybe I'll tell you the story when you're older, when you can appreciate the moral there." He was talking more about mental maturity than physical. Once she had a bit more experience as a shinobi, then she could understand why he had to do what he did, and that one day soon she might be forced to make the same choices as he.
Despite her youth, her words wrung true. He suspected that someone in her life was exceptionally pessimistic for her to have developed such a stance on the matter, but it wasn't particularly important either. "I don't recall ever saying that I'm upset or disheartened by what has happened in the past. It simply happened." It was true, he wasn't concerned with the past. If it meant that he got punched in the face by a grieving parent every so often, then so be it.
He had to resist the urge to make another smartass comment in response to her final inquiry, something about hair care, but it would be in bad taste to do it today of all days. "Discuss matters over a relaxing drink. With peers, enemy ninja, nukenin..." She might call bullshit again, but this time he was telling the truth. The world would be a much better place if those in power decided to talk things out instead of resorting to violence as the first option, wouldn't it? "What're you in the mood for? Barbeque? Ramen? Sake?"

She wanted to know now, but if she was set on not telling her, then bugging the hell out of him would just be a waste of time and effort. Although thoughts of the circumstances that might have surrounded the situation which Satori was so reluctant to speak of would surely float about in her head for a while, it wasn't going to kill her to not know, so she wasn't going to act like it would. "Whatever you say, Uchiha.""I don't know anyone that's not at all affected by their past, but if you want to pretend that you're over it and everything's fine and dandy, so be it." Inori muttered, nearly rolling her eyes at him. If he was in denial about the fact that his past upset him at all, let him be in denial. Sometimes people just proved too stubborn to deal with. Or maybe he was telling the truth, but to be honest she kind of doubted that. Whatever, there wasn't anything she could do about him acting the way he was and she wasn't going out of her way to antagonize him. Perhaps she didn't quite like him, but she didn't want to push all his buttons, either. "You like chatting with nukenin, huh? I bet that's pretty enlightening." And she was only being slightly sarcastic. She'd wondered more than once what some of Konoha's more notorious nukenin would actually be like, what they would be like if you had a friendly conversation with them - maybe even how they would tell their side of the story about how they ended up as nukenin. But she doubted she'd ever have the chance to ask any of them. "Eh. Anything's fine with me. I'm not that picky."words 311 tags satori notes 1986 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

He wasn't about to get down on all fours and beg for her to take his word on things, but it was a little peeving for someone to question everything that you say. Sure, it was a little his fault for acting the way he did, but still... The man's ear twitched a little at the girl's second comment, prompting him to look over his shoulder down at her, "Now, I don't recall ever saying anything like that. We're all shaped by our past. But that's completely different from letting it lure you into lethargy and whatever else." With that said, he faced toward again and continued moving forward, folding his arms over each other while hiding his hands in the sleeves of his robes. This was just another lesson that was learned with time. Even if she rejected what he was saying now, she'd come to understand and even accept what he said.
He simply shrugged, scratching at his elbow with his right hand, "Something like that. Don't mention it to anyone, you'll get me in trouble." He laughed and shook his head, "Well, not all nukenin are sadistic serial killers, you know. Some were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Don't take that as me saying you should go say 'Hi' to any random nukenin you see though. That'll just get you killed... or worse." He glanced back at her before shrugging for a second time, "Especially you, who are obviously a Yanamaka. Whether you know the secrets of your clan yet or not, there are plenty of people out there who would love to get their hands on you."
Since he assumed the girl would follow him wherever he went, he decided to take her back to his house for a second time. If she didn't care what she ate, then she may as well eat something he cooked himself. He'd never really had the chance to make something for a woman before, so she could be his test subject. Unless she had some kind of complaint, he'd lead her back to the Uchiha's compound within Konohagakure and then to his home, lightning the candles that he used to brighten the room before gesturing for the girl to sit at the table set between the den and kitchen; located perpendicularly between the two with the kitchen on the right side from the entrance to the house, before heading into the kitchen himself.

It wasn't like he would listen, anyway, and they would just be right back where they started. If she kept being overly analytical about every word he said, he would probably turn around and punch her, and she wouldn't really be able to blame him for it. "Don't worry, Uchiha, I'm not a snitch." Although, she really couldn't imagine the military police captain sitting around and having a chat with a rogue in the first place. "And I'm not stupid, you know. There is a brain in my head, and it functions properly. I'm not about to walk up to some rogue and ask if I can have tea with him." she muttered. Really, did he think her head was full of fluff or something? Although the stereotype of her clan was ditzy blondes, he really should know better than to think she was an airhead... even though they'd only talked a couple of times, it should be obvious. Soon enough she recognized the path they were taking. "Ooh, a second visit to your lair. Damn, I must be special." Hopefully he didn't expect her to do the cooking like he had last time, because this time she would most definitely refuse. It wasn't like he had anything better to do, being that she suspected he would have moped at the memorial all day had she not been there. But she was also skeptical of his cooking ability - as she was of everyone's, really, other than her mother's. "You had better know how to cook, or I'm going to be really disappointed."words 311 tags satori notes 2297 our broken hearts and twisted minds |

It was occasionally refreshing to have someone that was willing to speak their mind as opposed to dance around conventions and tiptoe the fine line of proper conduct. But at other times, it could be exhausting and even a little frustrating. These weren't really emotions that Sato was feeling at the moment, but he was sure that that attitude of hers got her into trouble more often than not. Indeed, he considered having a word with her Sensei. Not to tell the Jounin in question how to do their job, of course, but merely to inquire about how they felt about Inori and how she was coming along with things. Because she certainly didn't act like a normal Yamanaka, that was for sure...
His idle thoughts carried him as he set about the kitchen; pulling meat from the fridge while snatching some spices from the cabinets. Flower, sugar, milk, water... he continued grabbing bits and pieces of ingredients until he had a small pile built up on the counter. Once everything was set up, he took two and a quarter cups bleached flour and mixed it with with half a cup of sugar, and three and a half teaspoons of baking powder. Using his hand to make a well in the center; he poured six tablespoons of room temperature milk into the hole, pressing on the dough with both hands to roughly knead the milk into it. Once again he made a well into the dough and poured three tablespoons of water into the hole before working it into the dough, then did the same with two tablespoons of peanut oil. He kept kneading until the dough was pliable, smooth, and elastic; at which point he formed it into a tight ball and set it aside for later.
Now it was time for the filling! Using a small bowl, he whisked together half of a cup of chicken broth, two tablespoons of oyster sauce, two tablespoons of ketchup, one tablespoon of dark soy sauce, five teaspoons of sugar, four teaspoons cornstarch, a pinch of salt, freshly ground pepper, some cayenne pepper and even a few diced jalapenos for flavor- after all, it wasn't really an Uchiha dish if it wasn't hot enough to burn your tongue off. With that part of the filling done, he grabbed the meat from earlier- some homemade char siu, and diced it thoroughly. After preparing the meat, he used a wok to heat up two teaspoons of peanut oil, then placed the meat in with the oil. Once it was stir-fried, he emptied a rough tablespoon of sake into the mix straight from the bottle, then added a teaspoon and a half of toasted sesame oil. After the meat was ready, he dumped the sauce from earlier on top of it and mixed it thoroughly. After it finished cooking, he put the entire mixture into the fridge for it to cool, wok and all.
Since it would take a bit for that to reach a temperature where he could finish making the Nikuman, he left what he had for now and moved back to the dining room, sitting at a chair across from the girl in a slumped, relaxed position. "So, what have you been up to lately, Inori?"
